I thought I'd be able to find this out by Googling, but it does seem like
I'm the only person on the planet who wants to read a USB joystick and not
make one.

Anyone know anything about xbox controllers? I've got a couple spare and I
want to use them on my test rig without hacking them to pieces as I usually
do. I'm thinking as they're USB I must be able to build a circuit to
demultiplex the signal? Anyone have any experience/ knowledge in this area?

USB is a bit of a complicatied standard to try and interface to.
I've done USB stuff the other way round - ie connected my electronics to a
PC.
The USB interface you want would have to be a Master device to the
Joysticks.
You would have to use an IC with the USB interface built in to it and then
get the compilers and write all the code including all the handshaking that
goes on before hand.
That's a very tricky one.

I always thought there might be a problem with pads as their resistance is
quite high when the contacts are made.
Have you not had trouble with these sort of joysticks in the past?

Nuts. I was really hoping for some good news with this one! Maybe a
website or two to read.

I don't mind hacking pads, it's fiddly but pretty easy - I've done it on
loads of PSX pads before. I just fancied a challenge ;o)

Thanks

Nope no trouble at all - I currently use a PSX pad on my own test rig and
I've modded perhaps another 5 or 6 in the past for various people, all work/
worked fine with no fanciness or magic involved ;o)

Xbox pads (and msot pheripals) for that matter are USB slaves. In
order to talk to them you would need to constuct a usb 'master' or 'host'

Unfortunatly unlike regular serial, usb is much much more complicated.
When you connect a usb slave to a master alot of communication goes
on. The master says "Hello, you are connected to a usb master, I have
125 device slots available, i can support the following speeds ......
I am assigning device id F010A12B89 to you" and the slave has to reply
with "Hello I am an xbox control pad, i would like to communicate at
xxxx speed, i require the following driver id etc etc etc"

The best was for someone who doesnt want toget into coding a complete
usb interface handler would be to interface a microcontroller with a
usb host like a AN2131.

alternatively I suppose you could find some example PIC code on the
web to handle the usb interface and then you could use interface a PIC
via a MAX3100 usb to uart converter
