What's going on!!??

[ukvac] What's going on!!??
Has anyone else noticed that all of a sudden there seem to be a lot of HTML
formatted messages popping up in here with some sort of advertising banners
attached?

These are a pain in the butt to say the least since every time I look at one it
tries to fire up my web browser....once for every occurrence of said advert....
:-(

I've already checked on egroups and made sure my subscription is set so that I
should only receive messages in plain-text - so what gives?

All I get are some http flags at the bottom of the message.

Maybe your browser is set up to cache links to make your browsing
faster. It might be worth checking your settings.

I'm actually receiving some messages which are part plain text, part HTML. It's
these that are causing the problem, as soon as OE sees the URLs in the attached
adverts it attempts to dial out to these addresses. :-(

I've checked several times now and nothing I've changed has had any effect
whatsoever.

Sigh, these advertising banners are obviously being added by egroups to HTML
formatted email. As I said, since I specified that all mail should be sent to
me in plain text when I joined egroups I'm mystified by why I should be
receiving such mail.

All I can say is that if egroups don't sort this out, much as I like this
mailing list, I'll be unsubscribing all the mailing lists I belong to on their
server. :-(

Having recently trashed and re-loaded Win 98 after an attempt to install
IE5 went horribly and mysteriously wrong, I had a problem with IE
dialling out every time it was opened by anything like a JPEG etc.

I right clicked on the IE icon and selected "properties", then from the
"general" menu I selected "blank" on the default page URL, since
otherwise it tried to connect to load that page every time IE was
activated.

I also changed the "connection" menu setting to "never dial a
connection", since that gets done by Turnpike (The Demon software
suite).

It might be worth adjusting these settings, although you should make a
note of what you change in case it needs changed back.

Incidentally, noting the Vectrex part of your URL, yet another Vectrex
system popped up at Glasgow's "Paddy's market" recently. There must be
quite a few of them still about.

Yep, I've been doing a bit of experimenting; sure enough whenever I open am
HTML encoded message with one of these eGroups ads attached OE tried to dial
out to retrieve the associated picture (a .GIF usually).

I've done a considerable amount of tinkering with the IE/OE properties, but try
as I might I cannot seem to find a way of stopping this behaviour. Sigh.

Heh, heh, that's the first thing I change when installing IE/OE.

There does seem to be quite a few around still. I have three myself, I paid 30
for a pair with a bunch of games a few years back at a radio rally (only one
joystick though) and was given another with some games and a broken stick about
12 months later.

They used to pop up regularly in the local papers here in B'Ham for between 20
and 30 until about 18 months ago. Sadly in those days I wasn't particularly
into collecting more games for them.... :-(
