Which 2532 EPROM to buy

Hey guys

whats a better brand of 2532 to buy

I have the option of Hitachi (HN) or Texas Instrument (TI)

second - are they the same price - get the cheaper
third - are they the same speed - get the fastest

failing that, doesn't matter, they should both be very similar

my programmer don't support either lol

im going to use a adaptor I made on 2732 setting

Hitachi is cheaper and doesn't mention speed except they will be 450 or faster for either

I need them for pac-man, what is best for pac-man (original PCB)

Does you adapter definitely permit programming (Ie, have you tried it and know it works)? It can be a different kettle of fish to reading. Sometimes different algorithms, voltages or timings are required compared to a pin compatible counterpart.

Which is a good point, compare required programming voltages between the Hitachi and TI part...

im waiting on the adaptor but I do need 2532 chips and worse come to worse I have been planning on buying a Wellon VP-495 which is 2532 compatible

so either way I need to make sure it works ultimately in a wellon, if the adaptor done work with my old programmer then its no probs

I have 2 programmers and one goes to 21V and the other upto 25V

so yes I would need to look at the chip to see which it uses or if it doesn't use either

In general 2532s need 25V Vpp and 2532As need 21V Vpp.

Speeds go from 450ns down to 300ns.

I made a very basic 2532/2732 adaptor from two 24pin sockets years ago and it still does the job today.

A couple of years ago I decided to make a more user friendly version using part of a Galaxian-hack gfx daughterboard and a ZIF socket. This also works a treat and the ZIF makes it easier to use.

most prob go with A versions so I can use my burner that has a 21V max on it

yes I seen the one bob Roberts did and looks quite simple and easy to do

Algorithm wise, the 2532 uses the same 50ms pulse as 2732 (and later chips). It's only the TMS2708 and TMS2716 that use the 1ms pulsing algorithm.
You can wire up an adapter, but you'll have to remember to use a pullup/jumper on the VPP pin, as TMS2532 has VPP Vih to read, whilst the 2732 uses ViL to read on VPP.
(I started making my Arduino programmer today, another project I'll probably never finish)

I learnt that about the 2716 and 2708 and my other programmer supports them just fine

although for the 2716 I now use 2816 which are EEPROM drop in replacements

I have not done this to either of my adaptors and they both program 2532s with no problems.

favouredson: I've never tested it myself, I'm just going off the notes I made from the datasheets.
It wouldn't affect the programming though, just the read cycle.

Hmmm.
I have used the first adaptor maybe 30 times and the second maybe 10 times for programming.

Each use consists of blank check, program & verify and have had issues with some TI ICs (same as Equites) occasionally but generally it's been plain sailing.

Incidentally, every 2532 I have used has been re-used from the board being repaired or pulled from a scrap board.

I have one and it's USB, < $100 and programs all the 2532s (*see note below) I need for my Williams stuff - the problem really is just finding enough of the chips!

It will read 2532As, but won't program them because of the 21V I guess - I was actually thinking the other day that I might just meter the normal output and see if there was some way to run a 21V to the chip separately with a little stack adapter or similar

I sold one on the forum for £50 posted

I not in a rush anymore John Huhges sorted me out and set me a pre-burnt set for the price of the chips

but when I do get one it will be either a Xeltek or a Wellon

not touching a GQ-4x again

Just for reference to anyone else reading, I have a dirt cheap Acer Netbook running XP, connected to up to a GQ-4X via USB and it's perfect at reading and writing 2532, 2716, 2732 and pretty much anything else you need for the 80's video games.

In the photo below it's reading a 2532 quite happily (it's some 2532 I got off eBay which seems to have old factory machine code on it and needs blanking)

On later Windows O/S I'm not so sure, but for a few bob of eBay you can setup the scenario below and be up and away for next to no cash
