OK, before I start - I know, I know - "how long is a piece of string"?

Choosing a joystick is subjective, but I've decided the time has come to upgrade my standard 'Electrocoin' sticks to something a bit tastier.

I know they have their critics, but the red moulded EC jobbies have served me well. Very well, in fact. Diagonals are easy to achieve and they've withstood the rigorous joystick-waggling of both Fuzzy Juniors for hours on end.

However, one thing they can't do is be 2/4/8 way selectable. Many a Mr Do! and Pac-Man game has ended in tears because of this mere fact. It may also be because I'm sh*te at those games, but that's a different subject matter altogether.

My games of choice are from the Golden era - 'Nemesis' is about as modern as it gets, so I'm not too fussed about ultra-short travel or being able to pull off a 365 move combo in Super Street Tekken Virtua Kombat IV.

I've delighted at the thought of owning a Virtstick™ or four, but seeing as they're (a) like rocking horse faeces and (b) not likely to be made again any time soon (thanks for nothing, Vic!

), I guess I need to look elsewhere.

So, I need a 2/4/8 way switchable jobby that'll fit into an Electrocoin cab without too much swearing.

Fellow VACers, what do you recommend?

Is now a good time to dig out the MJ GIF?

This is clearly a difficult question, but the answer is just what you prefer best.
I just use different sticks for different games, and find that works for me. Also I don't have a 4 way restrictor, but then I don't play many games that are 4 way

my elctricoin has Sanwa JLW-UM8 sticks they fit in the holes fine, but I find them too loose even with stiffer spings in there

my NEO GEO arcade stick has Seimetsu and I think they are great

I was unable to find Seimetsu to fit the Eleci at the time but I think now you can buy replacement plates

there is also the option of HAPP series Joysticks that also fit in Elecis perfectly and they are pretty nice I have a set of them as well
(shout me if you need em)

I also have a set of Happ Super Aracde Joysticks they fit great too, those joysticks I fitted on Otto's Cab and he loves em.

as for ball or bat top that's preference but this is how I see it

for fighting and games that require joystick tacticks I use bat top and for the oldies like pac-man, galaga, robotron etc etc I use ball top silverfox07862014-09-28 12:44:33

Only just noticed this thread.

The EC reds came as two kinds, a short throw and long throw. so I guess it depends on what you are used to there.. IF they were short throw - they were made by coin controls aka Suzo so then a perfect match for those would be suzo happ euro sticks. arcadeworld sells them and they have a 8 and 4 way twistable restrictor and a couple of slidable parts to make them 2 way. the moulded ball is a size bigger than the reds though but are a very nice stick! http://www.arcadeworlduk.com/products/Happ-Series-500-Universal-STC-Joystick.html

I never liked the long throw ones much (but somehow managed to collect a few of them

) so can't recommend anything for those. I guess you'd be in Japanese stick territory?

Here's a shot of a couple of short throw reds. the long throw version has a standard dust washer and hasn't got a molded bevel..

(Incidentally if anyone has any short throw ones they don't want or want to swap for long throw let me know)
