I don’t even know what counts as an ‘arcade’ machine anymore, going off the contents of eBay and Gumtree

also, how do people feel about calling them 'videos'? I've only ever heard that from ops, so it's probably a way to distinguish them from other other kinds of machines they might have.

sorry, but i've already been out for my walk today

I've given up looking half as much as I used to, due to it just being a never-ending parade of junk, old and new.

I have an 'arcade' …(the standard members' statement)….. I don't feel special … I am just like any other member, am I not?

with my hoody , sunnies , and face mask I just look like you ……… You , YoU . yOu and YOU !

only difference my 'arcade' probably worth about £250,000+ (maybe exaggerated a bit but have stuff in loads of pubs , other arcades, a bowling alley and two swimming pool leisure centres also) AND I CAN'T PLAY ON ANYTHING ! now or for the foreseeable few weeks / months maybe? all closed

I should close up and make burkas and e scooters can still sell pooltables and recloth them etc. tho not at present as the factories are all shut and essential travel does not include me ……………

@ 2huwman ... we tend to call them 'videos' short for video games as said to distinguish them from all other types of arcadia misc...

That's how I've found myself describing them lately, must be from all the raids and stuff I've done, I never used to call them 'videos'!

All ops seem to use that term: videos, fruits, pushers, pins/pintables rarely do they say pinballs bizarely!

Use to say off to play on the arcades as kids. That’s where it came from and I’m not ashamed to say I still use the term lol - even though it is technically wrong It’s just what it’s always been since the 80s

When I were a lad they were just "Arcade games" and the cabinets themselves were the "arcade machines". Going to play on them was just "Going down the arcades" but you meant you were going down to the building that housed them.

As I grew up I only knew either arcade games or computer games, was only when consoles started gaining popularity around 1990ish do I remember the term Video games being a thing. Think we stopped using that so much when the VCS stopped being a thing and that was before my time really.

I've only ever seen people referring to cabinets as "Arcades" on US based forums, but I guess it's spread like many other words and phrases do online.

Always been the arcades for me too
To play the arcades
Or to play the arcade games.

I asked the missus

In the end it is the people who make the language.
There is the correct way ( according to those who have come before.
Then there is the new excepted standard.
Because if more people in a society speak in or use words in a particular way
It sets the new standard....

It’s happening all the time in all languages
Between young and old
and many different groups..

( she has got a masters in language
Speaks 4 languages
Is a multi language teacher.. interpreter & legal contract translates...
She’s doing Microsoft & Samsung mobile phone instructions right now

"I went to an arcade"

"what was in that arcade?"

"arcades"

"and what was in those arcades in the arcade?"

"arcades"

"and what was in those arcades that were in those arcades that were in that arcade?"

"arcades"

Yeah, but 'arcades' is still wrong. The correct term is, 'Spacies'...

Why do people call them arcades?

Probably because they either were not there or were late to the party?

In all my years of playing arcade machines, I've never heard any of my friends who grew up with me in the 70's and 80's call the actual machines arcades. Arcades were the big places where arcade machines were located.

That really annoys me too. "I've just bought a new arcade" ???

Sounds like an American thing to me and maybe people pick it up on YouTube.

I think its an Americanism. Bugs me too
I think so too, see it a lot on reddit. Same people calling LEGO bricks Legos.
