Wico Perfect 360 – unstable direction signals / cross-triggering issue

I’ve got a Wico Perfect 360 optical joystick that I’m trying to get working again but I’m running into some issues with direction signals.

The stick powers up fine (5V is present and stable), and the optical system seems to respond, but the directional outputs are not behaving correctly:

* Some directions appear stuck “on”

* Some directions don’t register at all

* In some cases, activating one direction will also trigger another (for example, pressing down also triggers right)

I’ve checked the wiring and tested each direction individually, and the issue still occurs even when isolating single signal lines.

From what I understand, these sticks use optical outputs that may behave like open collector, so I’m wondering if the outputs require pull-up resistors to function correctly, or if this kind of behaviour points more toward a fault on the PCB or sensors.

For context, I’m testing it on a modern controller board (GP2040) but I’m mainly trying to confirm whether this behaviour is normal for a P360 without additional circuitry, or if it suggests a problem with the stick itself.

Has anyone experienced this before or know if these sticks require external pull-ups to behave correctly?
