[ukvac] Williams boards
Hello folks,

while we're taliking about Williams sound boards, I'd like one too (Defender)
Mine went kind of 'squeaky' a couple of times, did it one last time and died a couple of seconds later. If anyone has a good board, please let me know or

if you have an idea what my problem might be, I'd be grateful for the advice.

Cheers,

Rob

I have a dead one with similar symptoms . . it defies diagnosis. When you
start it, it runs for 1 to 2 mins and then dies . . . any ideas anyone???

If it can be fixed, its spare so I'd be happy to sell it . . . I'm a bit
stubborn though so I'm determined to fix it myself . . .

Problems which occur after a period of time are often thermally related - you could try getting hold of a freeze spray and seeing if cooling any of the particular components makes a difference. Check for dry joints too.

Some general information for those seeking sound boards for the early Williams games:

The sound boards themselves are all the same, the only difference is the ROM used - a simple ROM swap will change the board from one game to another. The only tricky ones are Defender and Stargate which used a ROM half the size of the later games - Joust, Robotron etc. (a 2516 instead of the larger 2532 if I remember rightly), and being a different sized ROM these won't work in a board configured for Joust, Robotron etc. But - you can burn *2* images of the Defender or Stargate sound ROM data onto a 2532 and it will work fine. Simply stick a ZIF socket in the ROM socket on the sound board and changing the ROM becomes a 2 second job.

Sorry if you already know all this, but it might help some of you: if you already have one working sound board perhaps you don't really need another after all.

Well, I don't actually need any at the moment, but if someone want's to do it I'm sure that there would be a good response . . . I can give contact names etc . . .

Bob Roberts has them for $30 (or was it $35?). Anyway he retires soon so get 'em while you can!!!

I thought there was a DIP to select between these two sizes... (from memory)

No, there's a number of *soldered* in links (marked as zero ohm resistors) to restrap the boards for the different sized ROMs, but it having to resolder links isn't my idea of plug and play ) If you burn all the sound ROMs onto 2532's it really is just a simple 1 chip change

The two dips aren't used for any of the games except (I think) for Sinistar where they indicate the presence of the speech board (as far as I remember, I'm not really up on the Sini config as I don't have that boardset)
