Not a fan of willow so am wondering if I can convert it to a strider.
2025-12-05 11.38.51.jpg

Tried @GadgetFreak's rom patcher but since this PCB doesn't have location markers, just IC numbers I'm not sure what to change.
Plus the patched files which I assume are for the CPU roms are 30.11f,31.12f,35.11h and 36.12h which don't match any locations on my board.
None of the variation of willow in MAME match this board so that's no help.
Strangely the resale version of strider in MAME does at least seem to have the same rom locations.

Will follow this with interest as I have a spare empty cps1 b board (looks like a bootleg) 91634B-2 which I want to put a game on ...
Looked at doing the Final Fight Hack Version but the CPS1 conversion info I can find on google is not clear/obvious to follow. And the GAL for Final Fight doesn't seem to be available to download anywhere ...
I did look at GadgetFreaks rom patcher but I thought I read his CPS1 roms where only for use on a pang 3 pcb !?!? (hopefully I'm wrong)

The program roms could be used from my Pang patched versions but the GFX & the Gals would not be any use as they are specific to the rom size on the Pang board and the pinouts of the Gal sockets.
If there is a Mame version that matches rom sizes and layout then the gfx & gals could be used with my Auto C board program code I think.

In the mame strider that matches my board there are two CPU roms at 22 and 23 of 524288 which also matches the two CPU roms in my willow.
In your patched version there are four patched roms of 131072 so I presume I have to concatenate those four into a single 524288 rom.
Also in the other strider and willow mame files that don't match my board there are five CPU roms. Four of 131072 at 30,31,35 and 36 (as mentioned in my first post) and one of 524288 at 14.
I'm going to try using the strider rom file from IC location 14 plus these four patched files concatenated onto another eprom and try them in 22 and 23.

I presume you are talking about Mame set Striderjr?
So you just use my patcher to do the 'Fix' on the Striderjr rom set. You will then have the original 'sthj_22.7f' and a patched 'sthj.23.8f.patched'. These program roms will auto detect and work with any C board.
You of course will have to program up a set of gfx roms & gals to go into your board.

Got round to burning all the roms for this. I hoped to not have to change any gals since the rom layout is the same.
It's booting and looks like it's going through the rom/ram checks but screen is garbled and then it goes to a screen of a static pattern. The issue I think is which gal to burn.
Since on my B board the only gal is at 1a I tried using the 1a pal file from mame but that just results in a blank screen. On the rom patcher it says to burn CP1B1F.JED but I don't see that file in the striderj romset or know where it goes.

Just scraped that away to check. Didn't realize that would be the B board number. Sticker was welded on and took ages to remove without damaging the PCB.

@TheDaddy I'm converting to strider, do I need to use a willow gal file?

@Jacmar I'll give that a try,thanks.

My B board is a 91634B which according to the PLD archive wasn't used fr either willow or strider.

Shit sorry I would try the strider one then :-

But there again its says 89642B so maybe not , I reckon you may to try a load !

Dave.

P.S I am guessing here so not that sure !

ok. According to Mame source :
/* B-Board 91634B-2, Japan Resale Ver. */
ROM_START( striderjr )

But we all know Mame is not always correct!
You won't use the one the patcher creates as this is specifically for a Pang board.

I would try this set from PLD archive:

B Board (89624B-2)

https://wiki.pldarchive.co.uk/index.php?title=Strider
Do the PAL locations match your board for either this one or the (88622B-3) Gals?

Remembered wrong.On my B board there's an 11D and 12D.
Tried both locations with the gal from the PLD archive with the 1A gal replaced as well but no go.

Well am a little confused here, Mame doesn't actually list a Willow with 8 large GFX roms, all the sets have 4 large and 8 small.
Do you know if it is an original Willow or one of the china repros?
Were the PAL's in your board labeled and do you remember which sockets they went into?
On another note does the game run through startup & demo but with corrupt gfx?
To work out which is the mapper PAL you will have to use a multimeter to buzz out a couple of pins. Specifically pins 16 & 19. Each should go to the output enables on 4 of the gfx roms.
