My Xbox One was delivered this week. The delivery guy was from UPS and when I opened the door he was standing smiling at me:
"Xbox One is it?" <handing me the box>
"Yes"
"A replacement is it?" <more grinning / smirking>
"Er no, it's brand new. The first one I've had?"
<Now absolutely pissing his sides> "Whooa hoa! I'll be seeing you next week then!!"
He then walks off still giggling to himself. I'm stood there aghast. WTF? Did he really just take a dump on my exciting new console tech delivery? Can he do that?
All told the experience of setting up the console was very smooth and within about 40 minutes of careful unboxing and cable tidying, she was snuggled in-between my 360 and PS3. The console is about as large as you would expect and as hefty as a slimline 360; the design is nice and minimalistic when you actually get it in your hands. The mixed smooth / matt piano black finish is inoffensive. I will say that due to the amount of air vents on the sides and top of the console, the casing feels marginally more fragile than you'll be expecting. It's not going to crack or anything but it does flex a little. I picked up the FIFA 14 edition console as I play the game online with friends. 'In-Pack' game is a little misleading; all you actually get instead of a full retail boxed product is a card with a code on the back. Meh.
First time boot up is interesting. When you've got over the fact the XBO is the quietest console yet, you'll realise you are staring at a black screen. No loading or boot up text. No symbols. It's black and it stays there for an uncomfortably long period of time. Perhaps Kinect 2.0 was scanning my *cough* large frame and surroundings? Who knows.
But then the magic happens and the system setup screens appear via a giant hi-res joypad. Huge sigh's of relief all around.
"It's not buggered!" I say to Mrs Jodo. I can barely contain my excitement. UPS delivery guy can go f**k himself.
Setup is quick and easy; the 'day one' patch downloaded very quickly over my 30MB broadband; I certainly wasn't left hanging around like some have reported. My TV supports up to 1080i but XBO only supports progressive scan, so the console had defaulted to 720p. No option exists to try 1080i, which was odd and a little disappointing, as the 360 works fine at this resolution.
The Dashboard looks like a hybrid of the latest 360 incarnation and Windows 8. It's easy to navigate via either the joypad or voice commands; Kinect 2.0 is noticeably better at this and the success rate (once you learn the commands Kinect understands) is about 8/10. In all honesty I haven't customised the Dashboard as yet; I just wanted to play some games and check out the store for demo's and of course, to redeem my in pack FIFA 14 game voucher. Once in the store, there is a dedicated option to redeem a code, which takes you to a Kinect point of view and simply asks that you show the card to the camera, which I promptly did. The camera recognised the code and accepted it first time and before I had even fully extended my arm out, or attempted to keep my hand steady. It just worked. Impressive stuff.
I decided to have a game of Forza 5 whilst Fifa downloaded in the background (yes, no 'xxxxxx has stopped downloading" interuptions here!) Forza is stunning. Not forgetting I am playing at 720p, the game still impresses with the best car models, scenery, draw distance and lighting the genre has seen. Special mention must go to the new XBO joypad here; the independent and progressive rumble effect in the triggers is a game-changer. It feels revolutionary, albeit quickly forgotten as you slide into the superb driving model. The Drivatar is a great idea; I defy anyone not to be grinning like a Cheshire cat the first time you are overtaken by your friend's car in the campaign mode! I am looking for people to add / destroy! ...so please get in touch

It was a fun touch to find upon my return home from work the next day that my Drivatar had been kicking ass and taking names all day in my absence and had earned me a few thousand points!
That's it for now; a wholly impressive experience with none of the negative issues you've read in the press and no eaten DVDs or Blu-Rays either, (I watched Star Trek Into Darkness just make sure!)
