We have a minger here, full of that strange white mould stuff.
Anyway, Martin dropped this off the other day, I’ve left it until last night to make a start on it.

Screen smashed, not working as far as I know (well looking at the state of the cab I highly doubt the pcb works.).

Starting with the cab.

(I’m after more cabs like this to fill my garage so i like a challenge if anyone has any they want to sell on and I’ll make them nice again).

On with the show....

They do clean up beautifully though. And well worth the effort. I did one years ago and still love and play the cab regularly.

The resto is in my blog, below, if anything there can help you out.

Good luck.

Thanks Neil, yes I’ve seen your blog when searching about the cab, you done a nice job, lovely cabs and a lot smaller than they look in my opinion, then again the last one I had was a midway one which are pretty bulky, these ones are home friendly and will fit in the house nicely.

Cab is now stripped bare, it took me a while to figure out how to remove the bezel, you do so by undoing the 2 tabs underneath the top panel and sliding the tabs back towards rear of cab then the bezel pulls up and out from the front.

The connecting socket for the moon ballast was broken due to a siezed screw when I tried to remove it, Baker lite material breaks easy. That will have to be replaced with a new socket and plug.
All wiring now removed along with PSU, pcbs, noise filter and speaker, I would’ve removed the lot on the main wooden panel only I couldn’t remove the screws so just removed the lot from the panel.

Photos below of pcbs and broken monitor, time to hoover the bottom of cab out with my trusty hoover which has 2 filters (I don’t like the look of that white mould).
I don’t know what to do with the CRT yet, I may make use of it if I can cut the glass neatly, I have an idea for it as not to waste it from its obscure detonation.

Shame about the tube but looks like it had major burn, anyway. PCB looks in good shape!

[edit] Just realized that screen burn probably doesn't show on a mirrored display... does it?

I don’t think it would as the mirror has a dark tint to it.

It was already broken when I bought it, would love to know the story on it, I’ve never seen one broken in that way, it was also necked.

The PCB is not the original one as the lines on the connectors did not line up so it's been swapped out at some point.

Nothing exciting found in the cab, just a Benson & Hedges special filter stump, guns from the crt, a front door key, match and a restaurant card.

Cab is now bare and cleaned out, all the white mould gone.

Cleaned the sides with some polish and went over with a dry tac rag.
Painted front top above bezel and under bezel as well as inner top where moon cabinet sits.
Starting to look a lot better already.

I will be cleaning up the moon cabinet next including the backdrop.

I was impatient, I couldn’t find my mask so I used my T-shirt, then upon getting a fresh rag from my drawer i found it under the new packet of rags!
smiley36.gif

Edit: saying that I only touched it with the hoover which was on full blast, that got rid of almost all of it before using the rags. Stevros2019-06-07 08:01:05

yes definitely a keeper this, lovely cabs and perfect size.
Yes please terry, I’ve searched everywhere for manual and could only find the schematic sheet for the transformer.
I’ll send you a pm.
Thank you.

Got my Zac cab via bonehead last month, An Astro Wars. Very much like this one it is covered in dirt and powdered mould. Got it on a whim but it's such a solid great looking machine. Compared to the flimsy plywood of Nintendo's machines. It's my baby now. But have no idea where to get parts. Any ideas ? Looking fwd to seeing this one take shape.

Yes i very nearly bought that but the monitor put me off, hard to maintain those and i had one in the past which went on fire so be careful.

I'm unsure myself on parts, maybe put a wanted ad up on here?

Love the artwork on the Zac cabs.

Sorry guys not done anything on this since the other day as been sorting my garage out, got rid of all the crap and my van is now full
smiley36.gif

Hoping to continue with it tonight, just finishing off in the garage now as nothing booked in for a couple of days for work.

Here’s where we’re up to... spent a while sorting the backdrop part out whilst listening to Donnie darko in the background. I’ve put this part of the cab back in to save it from damage so will update the photos again later.

Inside cleaned up nice ain't it

Looking good. I'd never even seen an original Space invaders cab that I remember anyway till early 2000 when I was looking around arcades over Skegness way, They had one still working and loved the back drop and floating invaders, didn't know they were like it till then, I wasn't really intending to get more cabs at the time but when you say Arcade machines I either get asked if I have Space Invaders or Pac-Man so thought I should add both to the collection

If I hadn't got the Taito one I would sooner have these than Midway, one reason is you see these Zac ones in old programmes like Minder
smiley1.gif

Other is they look much better and smaller which is always Bonus

Out if interest, what are the Dimensions of these ones?

Should get those feet replaced with the Teflon ones

Yes that’s why I like them so much, the hologram effect graphics are awesome.

I had one of the midway space invaders and they’re well too large so take a lot of space up, I will get the dimensions of the Zac cab for you later and update the thread.
I was thinking of replacing the legs with castors so it’s easier to move around, one of these machine will be going in my games room upstairs once finished, unsure which one yet but the zac one is a really nice size, very compact and the paint finish is like a car, nice and glossy.

I need to find a monitor for this or at least a tube, I have the chassis and yolk from the old smashed one, hopefully find a tube soon so at the moment there’s no tube in there.

Yes space invaders is the one most people remember so should be in everyone’s collection.
I bought the glutton off Oliver which is a pacman bootleg, plays just like the real thing so that’s my pacman cab sorted I just need to sort the monitor out on that.
