I totally concur with the original post, last time I actually played on an old cab was at one of the UKvac Arcade club events...and that awas years ago, mine still all sit languishing in a chalet awaiting repair, 3 of them I've never even played. I sold a fair few cabs during lockdown, but the space soon filled with family and kids stuff, my DVDs etc, loft is packed, everywhere is packed. The family went away at xmas for 3 days and I got everything out of the loft and sorted it into boxes to start selling and moving on, there is no way I'd ever even be at a start point if they had not gone away, every room had boxes and stuff all over the floor. So far I've sold about 8 N64 games and a few other bits. I think January is just a terrible time to sell things as no-one has any money and I don't really plan on having a fire sale to get rid of it all when I really need the money. Next will be my Vectrex collection and set up, only ever actually turned that on a couple of times and all my Paperboy cab & bits. I managed pretty not to buy anything throughout January which took a hell of a lot of restraint. I just need to simplify things down, gigs and music is more my thing these days.

I cleared quite a lot of stuff and things are more tidy
Cabs appear to be selling well again from what I’ve noticed too

I made £500 selling old SW crap this week and a few GBA bits and bobs

It hasn’t cleared much space as they were relatively small but I feel good for having done it and the money is very useful this month.

I think I’ll get some more stuff drafted on eBay ready for the next 80% off deal.

It’s good to get some coin back on stuff you bought years ago
The cash can be more useful than a shelf of stuff you don’t use
I didn’t always think like that though lol

Since this topic began I started to sort out a few items but found I actually have more hidden under and behind other stuff and just mainly ended up moving things round and chucked very little and sold quite a few parts …

I have luckily hoarded loads of the Haribo sweet tubs from penny sweets at the youth club we owned… they are great for storing and stacking on shelving clearing old coin box inserts full of mixed bits..

Filled about 6 with keyed odd locks so far and unique screws and bits from all types of arcade machines the individual count probably exceeds 1,000,000 orange mech clips buttons switches plugs springs pinball coils etc . But I can begin to walk in the workshop without trampling the 50 or more polo chassis and various monitors , pcbs and power supplies

I wish Grant or Tony lived nearby I would mow their lawns clean their windows do their housework and car repairs in return for developing space occupied by 5 decades of hoarding monitor chassis in need of either just a test or minor repair?
Some of the monitors are so obsolete I can’t recall the make model or what they ever came from?

If all the machine manuals and parts catalogues were in one stack it would be taller than me but many sit on top of machines .. as do numerous multi coin mechs and credit boards

Over that time and being a collectoholic I have acquired a large tin full of world coins from the ‘small coin snatch trays’ on arcade 2 p pushers and various similar sized slot entries from older jukeboxes Not least I sorted many UK coins like 6d s you used to get 40 of those for a pound when I was a kid
I have loads of the UK £2 commemorative coins and 50ps even the very rare. 2009 Kew Gardens one

Got to the stage I had so many I just put them on the 2p pusher beds as bonus prizes there’s only so many Paddington’s and Beatrix potter you can accommodate.

I now realise we’re I thought I had about 30 various machines here there’s nearer 40+

Then there’s the couple of biggest single items we have an inflatable bouncing castle even rolled up would occupy a rear of an estate car also a portable40ft x 10ft marquee .. family events in the garden with a bbq are something else . Just plug in the disco and an odd kiddie ride ….Who needs Alton Towers theme park?

I have been real good tho … shifted / sold 6 pool slates numerous ball tray doors and hundreds of used cues donated to local youth clubs

Now I just need motivation to turn more junk into cash … last month I treated myself to a new car to replace the previous one with 17 years of service as a toolbox . But as I emptied the boot of the old jag I now realise I have numerous duplicated tools and more odd parts like force feedback steering belts and transistors . Various flo tubes and bulbs of all types to add to the stockpile the hoarding will never end here!!!!!

I just end up moving stuff from one place to another but have already found several items I lost years ago so it’s not a total fail

Yet…………… !

Hoarding is probably my life .. still related when in the early days we still traded in pound notes and ten shilling notes and rich people came in the arcade with fivers sometimes and we gave a tub of 2 p coins out as change …. So many that weekly we would empty several buckets back to change stock. …. 3/4 of a three gallon bucket is about £80 or 4000 coins

That’s approx 25kgs and as much as you can carry without the handle breaking out of the plastic rim and dropping all the coins across the carpet….I have a lot of repaired buckets here in the garden double ended lock tongues so handy when bolted to the bucket and handle in the other end cam hole …( useful tip? )

10p coins in space invaders and other early vids were also plentiful and the kiosk clearly said CHANGE HERE

Some foreign holidaymakers took it quite literal and we never knew the exchange values of paper money but began to accept all types of Yen Dollar Deutschmark notes for tubs is coins the value was immaterial as all those coins were going back in the games and we got a small collection of world banknotes as a result
The sad thing is we were possibly conned as a million rupees note was maybe only worth a few pence ???? But who cares they had fun . A great holiday I assume and meters on the video games clocked thousands of plays

Just a shame a few games back in the 80s got cremated before breaking even on their purchase price but win some lose some just wish some of those ashes could be resurrected today and worth ten times what we paid …. Ouch but again .. I only space was available back then !

MORE CRAP
Unlike many homes and not as old as oak beamed ceilings our house has a steel frame construction with concrete floors but the ceiling support irons are exposed

My love of all things colourful ( like a magpie) and supplying juke boxes both vinyl and cd to many pubs in the 80s/90s the hideaway record cabinets often sat in the cellar with the barrels of beer

Around that time 1994 the 2p coin change content from brass to steel alloy and became fully magnetic … yet another nightmare for machine operators in arcades

All the s10 and some s1 coin validator entry mechs for 2p had to have their pairs of ‘washer catcher’ magnets removed and the front of my filing cabinets were littered with these useless magnets

A brain bell suddenly rang and I picked up a few of the snap off barrel caps with various beer brand adverts on and out came the hot melt glue gun …. Magnet glued to beer cap and hey presto instant fridge magnets not available in shops!!!

See the picture below also features our electronics teaching books and several Miller antique reference books on our dining room wall. As said we hoard all sorts of crap ….

Enjoyed reading this hoarders anonymous thread😁
I can relate to a lot of it. I've been clearing stuff out for about 5 years on and off.
Mainly old toys of my son's (and mine from my mum's house), games, spare parts from anything that broke, anything really. Started to get more ruthless the longer I was doing it.
I found the hardest part was motivating myself to get started. Once I got going I got quite quick at listing stuff on eBay and built up a load of text that I saved and could cut and paste into listings.
When you have a break from it it's hard to get going again.
Like some others I also don't throw out any boxes or packaging (got bags full of bubble rap/bags/packing paper in the loft). As someone mentioned I like the fact that there's a double benefit when I sell something, a box less and a piece of crap less!
Problem is new crap arrives at the house, I've probably been getting rid of 2 things for every 1 that arrives so it's a good net reduction but don't feel like we get the full benefit of the effort!
Still find it a pain getting stuff photographed and sorted up for selling but I'm getting better at pushing myself into it because I'm a lot quicker at it.

The best part is I've kept all the sale money in a separate account so now I've got enough to try to get my first arcade cabinet. So I suppose that'll be a slippery slope?!

hoarding (or as some call it Collecting) like Arcade PCBs and make them vanish for years to come, having watched For Sale / EBay and american markets now for a few years, boards that arcade engineers need a few are far between and also a sucker for hoarding other non-arcade stuff. So to answer the OP question, how long would it take to clear, well a few years back it took me about 2+ months to relocate flats and storage, it was an expesnive move but I did end up getting rid of the storage unit at 140 a month too.
I am about to venture into a new chapter, so a lot of stuff has to go ! and I have changed my mindset a bit.

Love the detail of your years of collecting and working in the industry @69er
You somehow make what you have collected / hoarded very visual tho I am probably only seeing the tip
of the Iceberg in my mind 😂

Eons probably. But I just started today... wish me luck.
Good Luck :) I'm guessing you'll need it from your name

I'm still sorting stuff, moving stuff ready for table to go out my way, then I will have another big space to help.

Fell into old habits again though as I start repairing old stereos I start looking on ebay and spend 2 days this week picking more up :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: though one will be sold as I only needed one part from it for mine
