I’ve been hoarding for years but at the same time always trying to thin stuff out
Lately I’ve been sticking a load of stuff on eBay to shift
It’s taken me about 6months to make a small dent .
Not to mention the 20years of trying to clear stuff before that

What’s everyone else’s plans ,if they have any to eventually clear your hoard of stuff?
Not just arcade stuff .all your crap lol
Or do you keep it all forever ?

I’m settled on trying to just keep the cabs I have now and shift anything else that’s there

I reckon a good year for me. Made the huge decision last year and began in the spring. The vast majority went via eBay tbh. This might give you an idea of what’s sold and not sold in that time but it doesn’t include a lot of console hardware that also sold.

And I’m not sure if it’s a big no no to post a link to another forum, I will remove gladly if so

But I’ll link to my thought process here and the final decision/conclusion (in the very last post on page 4) to what to sell and keep and MiSter etc:

I have a storage unit full of mostly inherited crap. Absolutely no idea what to do with it all at the moment. Costing me £140 a month while I decide. 1 year and counting, so far!

I feel your pain .the inherited stuff has cost me a lot of my space .
I couldn’t let It be just dumped
The £140 a month is a bit of a
Killer
I’ve known people to just get auction houses to lift the lot and sell it .but then you worried if something is worth a lot and your throwing money away

I've not got a lot, but absolutely nothing is selling! I've always been baffled by the thousands of cabs in the uk, but very few wanted ads? How can nobody ever need any parts? I've just scrapped a load of stuff, because couldn't even give it away..

It would take forever to shift individually. Would have to sell bulk collections, which would lose a lot of value.

I'll probably just keep it all and pass it on to the family to "enjoy" when I'm gone...

Or make a bit of money on...

Unfortunately cant take it with you

The only issue id have with leaving a load of stuff .is maybe it would be a burden and the kids etc wouldn’t have the heart to sell it
But then if its good valuable stuff ,maybe they could be persuaded

I could always try my luck like some sellers and expect full price on each of the game I'm selling in a 100 game collection per console. Chuck in a "free console"😂

Family get tempted by money and so would probably shift at some point. If it wasnt something "important" like a wedding ring, or favourite watch etc, that's something I'm sure they'll keep.

But for a pcb, cab or SNES game etc, I'm sure most youngsters wouldn't really keep...

Maybe make it clear they can sell, no probs etc. That's what I will tell my family. When you get to 70s, you may feel ready to shift the stuff through the help of your family if you no longer play them etc and then there would be nothing left.

I'm just going to enjoy while I'm still "young"

I have a garage full to the rafters with computer stuff from when i used to do it. I need to list it all but have so much stuff its overwhelming. I have stuck a few bits on ebay but i have literally 1000's of stuff.

Just as a gauge i think i have around 50 brand new laptop chargers, maybe more.

Then there is all my arcade stuff , 300 or so pcb's and not enough room for them. I also need to clear the garage for a few cabs i want.

I need to get my fat lazy ass into gear to be fair. But then again i have so many jobs around the house as well its hard to find time to do everything.

I suppose my new year resolution is to try and do it !!

Dave.

This is a sore subject :ROFLMAO:

My gran was a hoarder, my dad is, and for the longest time I followed their lead and probably still do!

As some will know my gran sadly passed away in Oct 2022 and I'm still dealing with trying to close down her estate, the land registry are really screwing me hard at the moment and for no reason. Equally in August 2023 I put in for planning permission to raise my garage roof so it's at a height where I can actually stand up in it (the internal height is 6ft at the short end and I'm 6ft 3', and they rejected it in Oct 2023 saying I would cause 'visual harm to the area'! So I'm now appealing the hell out of that saying they're totally unreasonable! Mean while with all that going on I have:

  1. Industrial unit with multiple arcade machines in, car parts, tools, TVs, all sorts of crap - £300 (have had this for 5 years now and never really go down there). A car in the car park (which is my favourite car - but by the time I get round to fixing that would be lucky to have a floor pan left.
  2. Shipping container - £150 a month - this is where I'm trying to organise and box up anything important for the short term, game consoles, PCs, arcade parts, some of my grans stuff I want to keep.
  3. my grans house - currently my arcade monitors are here for servicing and repair, there are a few boxes of her stuff here to put in storage, also quite a few cupboards of stuff I still need to go through and sort out. Oh also a sofa bed which was mine as a kid and I want in my final game room.
  4. my grans loft - this is something I try and ignore, but there's full exhaust systems up there for my old car, Ford Capri parts, game consoles, big box PC games, arcade parts, drive up ramps, Hi Fi's, speakers, old wall paper pasting tables, old wooden ladders, all sorts of stuff.
  5. my grans garage - there's a few bits out here, a BMW differential out an M3, and more stuff that needs to be sorted through.
  6. My parents loft - all the boxes for all my consoles, some toys, HiFi, car parts, my 007 collection of model cars, books, DVDs etc.
  7. My parents garage loft - lots of childhood toys, some CRTs, stuff which was actually my grans brother who died when I was 4 - that is technically mine also.
  8. My house - too much stuff
  9. My loft - dumping ground
  10. My garage - where most of my arcade machines are in bits, which are supposed to move to the industrial unit when the council get out of my sodding way.
Because of a perfect storm of obstructions from the land registry or the council I can't really do anything I'm supposed to be doing, mean while I'm spending a fortune on storage, mean while things are getting older and into more disrepair and it's all just a total mess.

Having had to deal with my grans estate I now know the horror which ultimately awaits my girlfriend if I was to drop dead - and it horrifies me that she would have to somehow deal with all of this. My ultimate goal is to build my game room in my garage, get it exactly how I want it and short of a few spares sell, bin, give away anything outside of that. None of us know how long we have - we can probably all agree it will never be long enough, so I desperately want to get my life slimmed down and in order for the sake of everyone in my circle, but as I say, it feels very hard to even make any progress when you don't know if you're coming or going. I did start emptying my grans house and then due to all the screw ups have started moving some bits back there because its essentially storage I'm still paying council tax/gas/electric on so might as well use it!

Happy 2024 :)

  1. I edited a lot out save repeat read BUT I SERIOUSLY THINK YOU ARE A CONTENDER FOR MY “undefeated champion arcade junk hoarders crown “ I held since 1977

Been retired for a couple of years so it’s shrinking slowly but I pick up old spares catalogues from Suzo or Deith leisure and it’s like a stock take list of my bits and pieces…. Some stuff has no real value any more BUT ITS LIKE PURE GOLD TO ME..

Visitors are amazed at the variety over 5 decades from orange mech clips and fuses up to kiddie rides and chunks of arcade centre machines like Roulette & Toy Cranes

I am 70 now and would like more …. Sorry ‘some ‘ space any flat surface is sacred as it soon gets full THAT INCLUDES 99% of any Floor area in any place especially at home…..

Good luck trying to do same ….” My name is 69er and I am an addict of hoarding and it’s incurable “ in my opinion

GREAT TOPIC happy to know I am NOT alone. Thank you … see you at the next H.A. Meeting (hoarders anonymous) it would seem attendance will be high this year ???????

I am down to about 30 machines at home

However parts … I need a quote for about 6 skips

I’m going to be lazy and copy and paste my post from the linked topic really to say about taking the plunge to finally sell:

“…really a ‘I have to one day’ and there are perhaps a lot less days left than there are gone and now just seems the time to sell. Yes, I love the whole possession of actual hardware, boxes, manuals and the nostalgia is super strong and the hunt was awesome but the truth is for 95% of the time I’ve owned them they have sat in a self storage unit in sealed boxes never seeing the light of day.

Anyone in the same position will know it’s a lot easier every five years to sort through and remember the joy and then be daunted beyond words with the colossal task of disposing of decades worth of purchases so you just shut them away for another five years but one day you have to bite the bullet.

Others have written far more eloquently than I can, especially the post about things turning to dust [before I turn to dust]. However, without getting morbid I have to face the facts that I’m never going to want to invest the time conquering all 96 levels on SMW, attempting a Megalopolis or saving six fellow passengers from a sinking Septentrion. And that’s only SFC. Yes, I have the time but I’d rather be riding my bike, going for a hike or sitting by the beach having a coffee and watching the world go by with Mrs P.

It’s a thin line always between collecting and hoarding but I’m enjoying learning all about MiSTer, planning the build and making a new joystick. And YouTube is always there to enjoy seeing others handling and talk about the original hardware that I’ve enjoyed for so long.

Just sorting everything this last month is hard I have to admit, but we’re only ever custodians of this stuff and the messages from grateful new owners ease the loss.
biggrin.gif

And I’m not giving up everything, a few select titles will remain with my gaffer taped US SNES as will my Core Grafx and a box of Hu’s.

A guy came and bought thousands of ex jukebox singles some years back and his 7cwt van was so down on the suspension he rang his wife to bring a car as well to fill the back seat and boot and there’s still some here yet……..a charity got about 2000 cds many in correct box amazingly .

I also had a mobile disco over same period so a huge number still hoard tho I gave that up a few years back but my favourites ????? Well …. still in carry box cases vinyl decks in store as my cd decks easier to transport in car ……

Middle daughter re- marries in August so already hired a local pub to close for the day and will have my lighting set up in the dance room but not doing the MC stuff .

So how can you chuck stuff or sell it

My tag signature here says “if you chuck it away you will need it the next day …” …
