Update time!
I decided to have a go (following a little encouragement from Mitchell Gant!) at the dreaded life threatening Philips Laserdisc mirror fix outlined here:

I have 2 players that I am testing thanks to Alpha1 - one spins up and just....spins and spins....and spins. The other spins up but then makes a telltale (I'm told) noise that means it's trying to lock onto the disc with the laser but failing. This was the machine that was selected for the mirror fix as it was felt it was the most likely to work afterwards.
After dismantling the player the lens assembly was removed and (with more help from Mitchell) the mirrors removed.
You can see that I've marked up accordingly as per the repair guide linked above. Even now you can see that one of the magnets under the mirror has slipped and is 'peeping' out of the side. This is catching on the casing and preventing the mirror from pivoting correctly. The status of the other magnet was unknown at this stage.
Upon removing the mirror from the casing, it's is clear what has happened here; one magnet has slipped and the other has fallen off entirely.
The remaining magnet will need to come off, the whole assembly cleaned to remove the old glue and both magnets glued back on in the correct places.
Here is the first one done. I had to nearly 'get the mallet' more times than I care to mention just to get this far!!
The guide is really excellent and easy to follow; it's just very, very fiddly. Shaky hands need not apply!
...and the second magnet on. The photo makes it look like the magnets are not flush / straight to the side edges but they are perfectly done - I blame my crappy iPhone 4s camera! This whole process, just to get this far in a few photos takes about 4 hours by the way
The mirror assemblies are now back in their casings and ready to install back into the player. They both pivot freely as they should.
