Duke of Lancaster Galaxians

I hooked up with Rav this Thursaday to purchase 2 cabs, a Stern Scramble and an Atari xevious. Whilst there as it was my first visit to his vault of wonders I asked to have a look around and had my eye taken by a fairly poorly looking Galaxians. This machine was rescued on The Duke of Lancaster Raid. Sadly it had suffered from rusty water dripping down onto the front and I thought that it may be too far gone and would require new art work. I agreed a fair price and took the gamble and loaded it up with the other machines. This is what it looks like.

Keep em peeled for progress reports.

I unloaded Galaxians and other machines on my return and left it till the following day to have a good look at it. My priority should really have been to work on a Triumph TR3a I am restoring (along with numerous other classic cars) but I often find myself side tracked.

I am also part way through refurbing a widebody Mario, which I will post up later, but like I said I get side tracked easily as you will see if you read on.

I started with the Stern Scramble which Rav told me had a monitor fault. It had the plug ripped off by being trapped whilst be moved prior to my purchase, so the first job was to fit a plug. Working out the american wiring proved problematic but a quick call to Rav cleared it up (Thanks again Rav). Whilst doing this I decided to spot test the rust on the front of the Galaxians. I had done a bit of research the night before and read various posts on the internet about how best to remove rust. A number said to be wary of certain chemicals as they will set the rust. Most suggested using lemon juice and salt. So I ignored them all and decided to take a gamble with some acid I have for cleaning car wheels!!!

Whilst it was soaking in I fitted the plug and fired up the Scramble (And women say men can't multi task!!!). The monitor was indeed gone as Rav had said. It coined up and sounds were audible but sadly no screen!!

Back to Galaxian to see if the acid worked and with a bit of agitation some rust came off. This was a right result to say the least as I didn't think anything would shift it as it was really heavily ingrained as you can see from the above photos. To be honest I was still very sceptical at this stage and was expecting to have to buy new artwork cpo etc.

I persevered and a few hours with the acid and some traffic removing fluid (valeting solution) this was the results.

yer.that is really good work,i saw the galaxian and didnt think it would be too bad to remove,as the vinyl on galaxians is rather thick.despite how bad it looked.
damn good work btw!!

Very cool. I saw this at Ravs and it did indeed look very sorry for itself as far as to say it was a virtual write off, just shows that first appearances can be very deceiving....nice work old bean, my Galaxian also came from rav

Galaxian = superb

yeah it wasn't rust rust if that makes any sense, just rusty water that was dripping. The cabinet itself was as good as the other one and she'll be a beaut once done!

It's great getting stuff that looks really bad and after a good clean the difference is amazing

some of the stereo stuff I've restored has looked awful till it's been stripped down, fully cleaned and rebuilt, it looks like a different one

is it working yet?

No didn't even contemplate plugging it in as you can see from the photo of internals the sea air has corroded pretty much everything. The fuse holders have rotted out instantly. No board in it currently.

Everything will be stripped out.Metal will be stripped back to clean (in sand blaster or on wire wheel) and re painted in correct colour. Monitor will be overhauled re capped etc and all leaf spring switches will get replaced refurbed etc before the plug gets put in the mains socket. There is a lot of work ahead and I doubt it will get done any time soon as there are 3 cabs in-front of it.

On the thought of corrosion I wonder why sacrificial anodes are not put on or near boards. They have these on Boat engines, the idea being they rot out before the leg, prop or casing becomes corroded. I am obviously aware that not every board is subjected to see air but seeing as loads of boards I have come across have suffered corrosion it would be a sensible idea, do you not think?

It's been a long time since my original post, so thought i better give an update.

well have got inside it and replaced 1 of the transformers, thankfully I had a midway pac man spare. Took a while to figure out wiring configuration as it had been chopped about a little but got there in the end. fired it up without the board in and it blew the fuse. I didn't have any slow blow fuses so had put too low a rating in. Installed a 2 amp and all was good monitor powered on.

Have just stripped the cp, marquee and coin door metal work bare as was really bad as you can see from photos. Used acid etch primer and then 2k primer for light blemish filling, wet and dried and has all come up good. Joystick shaft and coin insert and reject button have been sent for chroming. I think they were originally galvanised but though I would give a slight bit of bling to it, hoping they will turn out ok.

The coin doors on these are weird as they have a light stone chip type of effect with a metallic grey finish, so i used a worth stone chip from a distance so i didn't get too much build up then went to Halfords to match up the paint. i am happy with the result, it looks pretty close.

Trying to match colours for artwork on sides to fix the graffiti, from kids like me!! Which will be tomorrows exercise and firing the cab up with the pcb in to see if it is alive. It's like this but worse all over unfortunately.

Think it's gonna be a bit of a bastard to mix the colours to an exact match but I am determined. Sorted the black touch ups today with ultra fine artist brushes (courtesy of Aldi!!) and the guy on Ricks restorations who does the free hand painting detail etc makes it look a lot easier than I found it with my shaky hands!!!

Am after sourcing buttons or springs for buttons as these have rusted and no longer spring, also after a Control panel overlay, if anyone can help as the two I got with it are sub standard. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

will put up some more photos etc in the next few days.

It doesn't need donor parts really mate, thanks for thinking of me though. sold yesterday anyway. Only needs buttons and CPO that I am currently aware of. So if anyone knows where I can get a CPO from or buttons please hit me up as they say across the pond!!!

Will be putting some more resto stuff up later but for now wanted some input from you guys please

Today i removed the metal shield that houses the de gausing cable.

The metal shield was rusty as are most of the metal components on this cab. I cleaned the rust off with my wire wheel on the grinder and applied a rust inhibitor to the metal. It now has a motled cloud.

I was considering painting it in a satin black. so wanted opinions as to what the feeling is regarding restoration to a fairly original solid cab. Would you be happy to own a cab that's metal shield was painted an inaccurate colour or would you prefer it to be plain metal as was original? or am I being too fussy and just get on with it for f@cks sake!!!

Here are some photos of before and after.

Maybe if it were some more prominent parts I might be fussy but on that monitor shroud I wouldn't worry too much and would just crack on with a satin or matt black. Not like it's going to be visible anyway.
