SEVEN BLOODY MILLION? That is just incredible. The cab at Play Expo had 3.6 million on it and that made me feel small and puny! Do you have any tips for someone who can just about make it to round 5?

Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
The only real tip is not to be scared to try anything.
You need to play a fair bit to learn how best to utilise the weapon abilities and how to deal with each level.
There are so many bonuses available for doing certain things / collecting certain things / killing certain enemies etc. You have to memorize a lot of tactical info for this game and it's hard to know where to start.
I played a lot back in the day and could complete it without dying, however, after figuring out all the bonuses it became apparent that you ideally need to die a couple of times to fully leech points.
As you only have a short time it's probably best to download a .inp (or go to youtube) to see how somebody good plays and go from there.
The game ending is quite possibly the weakest one I have seen and you only get 100K for killing the boss! You get more than that for two of the bonuses.
