So how did Puck-Man get his name?

The name "Pac-Man" continues the eating theme of the game. In Japanese, "puck-puck" (sometimes said "paku-paku") is a word used for munching. So, in Japan, Namco named the video game Puck-Man.

Never been a huge fan of Pacman, sorry @PAC-MAN @Pacman83, but I have always loved the Japanese cabinets even though the Midway yellow Pacman cabinet is pretty iconic and great to look at!

I remember watching a videogame documentary and seeing a Namco Puckman on a visit to Namco Japan. I would love to remember the name of it. Had a game obsessed TV presenter as the host of the show. Anyhow as wildly successful as this was there aren't many original Namco Puckman cabinets in Japan. I think less than 10.

Let's start to unwrap it.

I love the back story to this cab, and it looks in pretty good condition from what you have teased us with so far.

I too (ducks to avoid the onslaught) have never got on with Pac/Puck man and still don't like it much, but there is no denying it's iconic status both as a game and a franchise.

Cabinet wise, its the cabaret version that I really like, and would probably be happy to own, just for it's looks alone, but I'm prepared to let you try and change my mind.....

So..

The cab turned up in Norway, and a European collector helped me get it.

It had an official/unofficial Pacland conversion which was odd. I'll get to that bit later. Here's the original advert pictures as well as some of when my friend collected it.

So the dilemma is i have a decent condition Puckman cabinet unfortunately converted to Pacland.

The monitor is original just turned to be horizontal, however the beautiful bezel has gone and replaced with black perspex, but at least they kept the unobtainable Namco start buttons.

The harness has been replaced as well, and this is where it gets interesting, because it's a proper Namco harness that plugs into the TOEI monitor, so this appears to be an official kit just with some odd choices made for the aesthetics.. keeping the original Puckman marquee (yay), but losing the Puckman bezel, Puckman PCB, and Puckman linear power supply (massive boo).

So where do I find these parts 😭😭

@Ronnie Dent and I came to an agreement and I paid and secured the Puckman.

It was original, other than a replacement JAMMA era joystick and it was not in the best of condition.

Still can't believe this was operated in the UK!!!

Here's some pictures after Ronnie collected it with some other stuff for himself.

Well hopefully someone scanned the bezel and you can get a nice repro made up!
It's that or politely asking Mister Namco if he still has the original silk screens you can have a borrow of.

(Very nice find, Best of luck getting it all restored whichever way you go about it!)
