I do wonder after taking it apart whether this type of cabinet ever entered full scale production . There is some nuanced metal work which looks like it has been hand finished / beaten on the coin entry section with a custom bespoke holding plate which I have never seen on another electrocoin model before . The control panel is likely repurposed from another model possibly a Goliath as there is filled dowel holes which suggest it was once holding a strengthening timber across.
Is it possible that the ’continental midi’ did not go into full production and was shelved ? Therefore it just exists as a prototype ?I am really not sure, but it could be possible.

Could this cabinet only existed as this prototype or a sort run ? I’m really not sure, but it could be possible.
Hmm, interesting. I'll have to go through my pics on old phones/computers when I get chance as I'm not completely convinced I won't have a pic of another one somewhere.

Great work stripping that old paint off. That panel looks amazing!

Yeah that's my one. I was told it was on site for a bit after that pic was taken and they swapped the sticks to the bat top ones but luckily the red electrocoin sticks were in the cash box so I could put them back on.
Cool :) how come it's only 2 player, is that the rarer Fortune 2

Can the CP can be taken off them

I certainly believe you have the knowledge and the archive
Matt to prove if others are out there . Have trawled web as much as possible but been fruitless.
The Marquee was originally white the same as brochure but was reversed at some point so the blue you see in the picture is actually protective film from
New plexi on the other side.
The white paint has slightly scrambled over time as you see in the picture.
I think it was created as a prototype for the photo publicity and as a new concept but was not actually taken up further into production.

is it a 20” or 25” screen Matt ? What Monitor did Electrocoin use on it ?

Thanks for the support and encouragement!
Will have that Cabinet looking as good as it was the day it was photographed for the flyer 😂
Time very limited for next few weeks with new work project but will be doing a little bit when I can.

Ah so the blue is just the protective film!

I don't think it's the exact cab from the flyer though. I managed to take a good enough pic of the same panel from the flyer and your cab and the woodgrain doesn't match.

So who knows, this could be one of just a handful made for a trade show as a very basic unbranded machine to be sold overseas and maybe they sold a load or maybe they got no interest at all so they just passed what was left on to another distributor.

First pic is yours, second pic is flyer..Screenshot_20250214_215741_Chrome.jpg20250214_215636.jpg

To do list for midi restoration -
1) red oxide prime and spray Coin insert panel - holding ironmongery bespoke section - spray finish
2) Control panel - weld blanking circles into unwanted populated buttons and redrill / configure to diagonal 6 button layout as the standard electrocoin layout. Will be tricky.prime and spray .
3) check voltages on psu and step down isolation transformer.
4) switch joysticks to Electrocoin happ joysticks as per picture (thanks @bones )
5) continue paint removal -
6) re-stain floor sliding section underneath cabinet and reattach
7) disassemble and clean all buttons
8) marquee - look at current white paint and either redo or add in a unigame marquee (already sourced)
9) Chassis service with gunblade.
10) deep clean
11) check coin mech
12) 3 x Bootleg boards sent off to be looked at
13) Prime / spray marquee holder (2 sections) and service door holding section.

Just on topic of brass tokens .. mostly they were made by a company called ‘eurocoin ‘ but many other distributors of machine parts like Maggi Maggi and others made them too …. It wasn’t an exclusive as far as I recall back into the early days late 60s when Ace fruity machines had payouts in tokens worth 6d sixpence with like an ace of clubs card design on and large 10p sized ones were used widely in slot operated seaside bingo game board panels. Always stated ‘ no cash value’ so they could only be spent at the source of acquiring them

A bit like 18th century workhouses paying workers in their own coinage so the people could only buy goods in stores owned by the big mill and factory owners.

Emptying the snatch trays ( under 2p entry slots) in coin pushers in the arcades for years I have hoarded loads and never seen that design above so know nothing about them … it’s not a thing I actually really thought about .

I recall also some big penny 1d Tooty fruity machines - drop coins in to light up a row of 4 symbols and on a few - an extra row of melons had a win called ‘GoldAward’ a big token worth about 2 shillings and sixpence (30d) but very hard to win one as the pin layout of the drop board discouraged a coin going in the outer two symbols on that row . The bottom row of bells only paid 12d if I recall ?

Thanks for the reply Norm !
I thought they were perhaps produced by Deith Leisure as came in a cabinet produced by them but who knows ?

I made lists like that for a few of my cabs around 7 years ago and I'm still stuck on number 1 for most of them. I thoroughly enjoyed making the lists though 😆 Seems like you're a lot more committed and motivated than me though.

@Bods I suppose SF2 was where the money was so the poor 4 player panels must have got the chop and as you say became Fortune 2. Yeah the control panels can be removed.

I have been pretty on it with the restorations over the last year and find it a good way to keep motivated striking things off a list! Also as much as anything it’s to try and quantify the time but also financial impact of a restoration (most likely not to be recouped in a monetary way but through the units of pleasure/ enjoyment and preservation) .
unless something really rare comes up which I haven’t seen / owned before I think this will be the finale for my Electrocoin collection. Have some other cabinet challenges ahead !!
The seller of the midi has been really nice and helpful and I can see by how well looked after it was that there was always the intention to do something with it. At first I cursed the paintwork but actually the more I remove in a strange way it has actually protected the original wood grain I think !
I Will probably invite him over for a game when it’s finished.

Yes they are very rare indeed. I've only ever seen 2 Fortune 4 cabs. One was a pic many years ago which had the four player control panel but converted to 2p only and the other is mine that has the smaller 2p control panel for dedicated Street Fighter 2 as in the brochure. Pretty sure I've changed those joysticks that's an old pic..

Missed this, very cool

I've got a pair of those Street Fighter side art

Good way to look at it, specially when you can get it off, could of ended up in a right state depending on where it stored etc so yeah could be a bonus, lot of work but I find it quite enjoyable like when I stripped the paint off the Star Wars and most of the artwork still there

I was originally unsure if I could remove due to the grittiness /impasto nature of the paint but have a process now so should be achievable. My doomsday scenario would of been to make a template and re-cut panels but glad I don't have to do that.
