sounds great!
How do we register boards and provide preliminary info on its faults so as how to decide what is feasible?

Or is it, drop the boards off and get initial inspection at the event?

To keep UK-Vac up to date with Jamma thread; t looks like the funding from Canterbury Christ Church University will probably go ahead if the museum is cool with that.

So, what do we think we need for the event? I'm guessing:

- Equipment for the workshop / repairs

- Logic probes & high-voltage probe (for discharge of monitors)

- complete Jamma test rig

- essential spare parts (cap kits and standard chips)

- kit for particular repairs on museum's cabs

- printed artwork / CPOs for museum's cabs - good for demos on how to properly apply them

- kit to make specialised jamma edge adaptors (space invaders to jamma etc)

- Printing of talk material

- Subsidy of travel for those doing talks / providing services (is that OK DrGlitch?)

What else?!

Brilliant stuff, and I'm convinced that we'll get the funding. What I'll need help with is in writing out a viable shopping list with which to put on the bid.

I think that covering train fare and/or potentially a night at the travellodge is viable for the speakers - what'd that be? £70 train ticket, £70 hotel?

Any suggestions, links or prices please do let me know.

Just list your PCB here along with its faults and I'll add that to the status post at the start of the thread.
If it sounds unsuitable then I'm sure someone will tell us before the event! There's obviously no guarantee you'll get it sorted on the day but I'm sure you'll be wiser about what to do next.

First post updated with status of those who are planning on attending. Still need a few volunteers to fix the museum's cabs and man the PCB workshop. I want to emphasise that the PCB workshop will be a practical knowledge exchange to guide the PCB owners though fixing their own games... you can lend a hand but won't be expected to sit for hours fixing other people's boards!

I'll try and get some more details on what's wrong with the cabs.

Just caught this thread sounds like an awesome weekend ahead, only recently saw the museums Facebook posts and got all excited. Alien syndrome with the cool topper - yum!
I live in cambridge and was at the museum a little while back when they hosted a Sinclair event. (Got to see sir Clive and had a go on a c5). I've been threatening to get more involved with the museum and maybe do some volunteering - I will definitely be going! If anyone is interested you are welcome to pop round mine for tea/beer, play return of the Jedi and see how my gorf restoration is coming along :) hope to meet some of you soon.

Actually I think I'll bring ROTJ along to the event, especially if someone has a van - if any of you are going and can transport the cab for me then give me a shout :)

Damn you family... this sounds like a great event and so close too... why do I have to be busy.

I would have loved to have come to this, are you planning to make this a regular meet/event...?

Awesome! PM one of the others already bringing a cab or two. Let's get the word out.

The name of the event is probably going to be 'Arc-aid: Cambridge'. How's that sound?!
I have a feeling it'll probably be repeated elsewhere if it's successful.

Anyone want to volunteer to make a kick-ass logo?

Who knows of an arcade guru who's not yet signed up that I can encourage to attend the event? We can cover travel & accommodation (sponsorship pending). These cabs won't fix themselves!

Hi guys,

Just to feed back in terms of the sponsorship bid, this is what I was looking at buying for use at the event:

Temp controlled solder station, desolder station, fume absorber x2, Eeprom programmer & eraser, monitor discharger, [oscilloscope & probe & case - is an oscilloscope needed? (it's expensive)], 3x tool kits (including desolder tool, cutters and crappy spare irons), flux, desolder braid, kynar wire, flux off, anti static mat, jamma test station...

Is anything missing or should be added / removed? Is the oscilloscope overkill? Should I replace it with a few logic probes instead?

Not that I know how to use any of this stuff...

This pretty much eats up the £2,000 - and after speaking with my colleague I'm not convinced that it'll stretch to subsidise other people's travel.

Most of that could be brought by people attending providing you ask!, if not all of that, thus saving you up to £2000. I would say it's crazy talk to buy it all. If you're serious about fixing PCBs at the event then you'll need more expensive kit like scope (maybe, but you won't know until it's required by which time it's too late), Fluke Troubleshooter (no way you'll buy one of them just for this - get someone to bring one), Fluke PODs (same), maybe logic analyser if you want someone to do a session on using one, same for signature analyser.

And I also don't agree that it's £2000 even if you did buy it all, though clearly I've not sat here and worked out every last penny.

I appreciate the advice Guddler,

Essentially I can get hold of a pot of money (up to £2,000) to help with this event, ideally in doing so giving me the kit that would be useful to do repairs in the future. Hence buying the kit as opposed to borrowing it. To make things even more bizarre the money has to be spent by the end of July otherwise that funding pot disappears...

I just thought that this might help the event and set me up. The other idea is to buy another cab...

It comes in at £1,600 for the kit. The other £400 is earmarked for printing etc (£250) and my travel.

OK, I guess if it's stuff you want to buy anyway then go for it. I'd look at getting people to bring the more expensive kit I mentioned, provided of course there will be someone there that knows how to use it

(which oddly, isn't always the person that owns it).

I think that it's best to talk with Jason about what the museum already has and what would be useful to keep after we have gone. I agree with guddler that we need to get a few people to the event that know their stuff... so maybe having some form of travel / accommodation subsidy is actually more essential to having a successful 'knowledge exchange' event.

DrGlitch is connected with Canterbury Christ Church University and they have a fund for 'Knowledge exchange' events. DrGlitch is putting together a bid document to outline how the funds would be spent if granted to us and the museum by CCCU. It's really very generous of them!
