Hey all, I've just heard back from Dr.Glitch and it's looking unlikely that we'll get any funding from the university
smiley6.gif
. It's not the end of the world as it's panning out to be an awesome event even without the extra kit - really looking forward to just playing the cabs after we've fixed a few up.

So, my apologies go out to those I've promised any payment for travel and accommodation - unless we find another way to get cash you'll have to pay your own costs. Please get in contact if this is now a problem for you. I've a few ideas to raise a pot for this but it'll mean other members being generous... look out for another thread on the subject.

Ianski is visiting the museum very soon so should have a list of what's wrong with the cabs and their general state - looking forward to that!

Should be an awesome event, especially the games evening after the 'business' time

From Ianski on J+:

Had a great afternoon at the Centre on Sunday and made a preliminary check of the cabs, as expected none of them work but even with my novice experience I reckon a couple of them are definitely fixable with the right bits needed. At this stage we only took stock of the machines and tried powering them up, we didn't check voltages or try swapping boards/components.

Hopefully those of you who are more knowledgeable will have a few pointers and suggestions as what to do next, and if anyone knows of the availability of missing parts outside of an ebay hunt please let us know. Jason doesn't mind buying the essential missing bits, he just wants the machines to live!

First up - Centipede:

DSCF0515_resized.jpg

This is probably the best condition cabinet of the lot, sadly the power brick was missing, but there are bricks in the other Atari machines that can be donors until a new one can be found. Untested for now.

DSCF0575_resized.jpg

Apart from the brick the rest of the cab looks complete, perhaps someone can confirm the correct parts for the game are present minus the brick? A pretty nice looking cab though and in generally clean condition.

DSCF0574_resized.jpg

Unfortunately the trackball is broken and doesn't move at all, we didn't get access to the coin door so couldn't confirm what the issue was but it felt like the whole assembly needed a rebuild.

I hope that's enough to be going by for now, I can of course go back to the museum if you need any other details confirmed, the goal is to get the cabs to a fixable state so any help is appreciated.

I must say the Centre is the perfect venue for this kind of event, not only does it contain loads of cool old computers and gaming consoles but has plenty of space with an adjacent "classroom"- ideal to work on stuff and have our own uninterrupted space.
They also have a decent amount of repair tools and equipment on hand, after all the centre tries to preserve vintage computer equipment, not a million miles away from arcade games.
Jason is a really great bloke and the centre is well worth a visit if you are in the area. I do hope some of you can make the journey & come along, it should be a very informative and fun day/night.
I want to say thanks to NES4Life for the great idea and for making it happen

I'll post up the next game soon.

Next: Xevious

Needs some tlc but could clean up to be a really nice machine, pretty good order inside and looks complete. This one didn't power up at all and apart from a cursory check of the fuses no further inspection was carried out, joystick is a little sloppy so could do with servicing too.

Mostly Atari games in this collection, so a number of AR boards will probably need looking at.

Great stuff Ianski!

So guys, who's got an Atari power brick or trackball for sale / going spare for the Centipede cab? Are these trackballs generally serviceable? Same again for the red ball-top joystick for Xervious?

Hi All,
Thanks for your support. We're REALLY looking forward to the event. We want to make it a great social thing for everyone. We'll close the doors on Saturday at 5pm and you guys are welcome to stay and enjoy a beer, maybe order in some pizza and enjoy a retro game or two! Then if anyone wants to continue on the Sunday you can get in on the same ticket as saturday!

By the way, great meeting you Ianski :) I think I have found the power board for Gorf and a spare Asteroids board.

Cheers

Jason

From ianski:

Alien Syndrome:

Let's start with the most important part
smiley36.gif

DSCF0518_resized.jpg

Topper and marque are great and should come up well with some cleaning
smiley1.gif

Overall the machine isn't in bad condition but didn't power-up, the switcher probably needs replacing. Sadly though the neck board on the monitor has broken and a new tube is needed.

DSCF0547_resized.jpg

DSCF0551_resized.jpg

DSCF0549_resized.jpg

DSCF0550_resized.jpg

The control panel isn't in great shape, not sure if this is supposed to be an instruction card or a fine example of butchery,,,

DSCF0522_resized.jpg

The left joystick in particular felt very loose, maybe a perished grommet?
By the way I have much better quality images if they are needed, give me a shout.

Unfortunately looks like the tube is bust rather than the circuit side, the museum does have a couple of spare monitors but not one the correct size I believe. We only made visual checks on the fuses and didn't check voltages or continuity, this would be the next on the list to do (maybe should have been the first
smiley9.gif
)

From computermuseum:

The glass neck of the tube is broken so it can only be repaired with a new tube or complete monitor chassis. Our spare monitors are way too big. It's a wells gardener monitor chassis. Anyone got one that I can buy? The front panel is a real state. The metal panel has had a big rectangular hone cut in it and then filled with another piece and then the plastic overlay is present but not attached. Flip knows why!!! Thats not foil that you see - its an aluminium panel mounted from behind (ooh er!) - It's a real hack job :(

If the neck is broken, you need a new tube. A monitor chassis will not help you here

From ianski:

Asteroids Upright:

The worst physical aspect of the cabinet is the control panel which is badly rusted. This is printed directly onto the metal so maybe its a case of replacing the control panel rather than getting an overlay, I'm not sure what options are available.

DSCF0523_resized.jpg

We did manage to get the cab powered up using the 115v adapter rather than the 240v one, board light was on but there was a regular beeping (lower in register, a bit like buzzing) coming fro the speaker, it also sounded like a similar fainter sound was coming from the monitor area too.
The spot killer light was lit on the monitor board, there was no video signal and consequentially wouldn't play blind.

Apart from that everything looks complete, and as Jason mentioned there is a spare main board available.

DSCF0561_resized.jpg

DSCF0562_resized.jpg

At least the power brick was present in this one, and all the different voltage adapters too, nice.

DSCF0563_resized.jpg

DSCF0560_resized.jpg

Space Invaders:

The bottom of the cab has some water damage that should really be sorted out but the cab is pretty presentable, though the control panel is very rough and could do with a replacement.
The rest of the parts all seem present.

DSCF0526_resized.jpg

DSCF0529_resized.jpg

We got the machine to power up, neck glow was present on the monitor but no image displayed. When the machine was turned off a white line/dot was on the screen so it's getting something. Would not play blind though.

DSCF0567_resized.jpg

DSCF0569_resized.jpg

DSCF0568_resized.jpg

The boards were loose in the bottom of the cab, but there are 2 sets of both boards and brackets.

DSCF0565_resized.jpg

DSCF0566_resized.jpg

At first we thought half the ROMs were missing, but both boards only have 4 present. Jason suspected faulty boards hence why the replacement was available, hopefully between the two a good set can be made.

Gorf:

Apart from the control panel this cab is in pretty decent shape - I'm envious of the good condition of the sides, much better than my Gorf
smiley1.gif

I know decent repro control panels are available for these so should come up nicely with a replacement. Joystick looks and feels good too, probably needs servicing & the opto's cleaning though.

DSCF0530_resized.jpg

DSCF0532_resized.jpg

DSCF0535_resized.jpg

A bit messy down here...As you will see the power board is completely missing so we didn't get any further inspection done. Apart from this everything else seems to be present.

I have a board for my gorf that can be used unless its replaced with a switcher, although my board needs repair and I've read that when these boards go wrong they shove out a high voltage which fries the chips, still might be good to get it working though.
I think Jason would prefer his machines to run on 240v so parts for conversion are needed where applicable, maybe a few new switchers are in order?

DSCF0556_resized.jpg

DSCF0558_reeized.jpg

DSCF0559_resized.jpg

Cool old bulbs, most likely blown though.

DSCF0557_rezied.jpg

One thing I forgot to check was whether the horizontal width coil was intact, as they break easily. I'll go back at check this at some point.
In the meantime I have a replacement chassis I'll bring along (not tested though) with a newer coil installed, I bought it from someone on ukvac and it's apparently been rebuilt and re-capped, so hopefully working.

There are 2 full board sets in cages available, plus I have 2 of my own (one set is supposed to be working), so again I'll bring mine along so there are spares to try out. If we can get as many games up and running on the day it means more to play with!

Asteroids Cocktail:

Pretty decent condition cab although didn't get a shot of the outside (d'oh!)
Powers up and plays blind which is good but no image on the monitor sadly. It probably had too many plays at the Gadget Show where is was exhibited!
The monitor has a small area in the middle where its burned off some of the coating.

DSCF0580_resized.jpg

DSCF0581_resized.jpg

DSCF0583_resized.jpg

The diode attached to the HT lead was apparently arcing and welding itself, Jason soldered connections on to it and sealed it inside the black plastic case here but this obviously needs sorting out:

DSCF0579_resized.jpg

Some creative soldering here - needs a replacement connector:

DSCF0582_resized.jpg

Well that's all for now, apart from one other cab that is still in storage at the moment which is a Tempest upright! When that arrives I'll get some shots of it and see what that's like... colour vector monitors are supposed to be pretty scary though aren't they?
Would *love* to see this one up and running!

Again if any more details are needed just post up and we will see what we can do. In the meantime thanks for the help and generosity to those who are donating much needed parts

Hopefully I can help with the Asteroids (I had one for years and know them quite well.)

Will there be an Internet computer and printer there we can use for resources etc?

Computers are set up in the office/workshop upstairs so shouldn't be a problem. I think the museum has a printer - if not I can bring one along.

I so wish I could attend this event. Until quite recently I used to live literally just down the road from the Centre for Computing History and even met Jason when I donated some stuff. Now I (and all my arcade stuff) am on the other side of Europe so it's really too far for me to travel.

Friendly reminder that this event will be taking place in less then a month!
If you've not yet bought your ticket then you may want to do so now.

I'm going to be doing a talk on 'Collecting, cabs & code' as there's no volunteers for any instructive talks :( May resort to showing a video clip or two! Anyone bringing a faulty PCB for the workshop?

I've bought a few of the non-working/has problems boards from DKams on the forum that I'll bring along, I don't mind people having a play with them. If any need chips One is a Xevious board that might be useful though.

If there are no instructive speakers available perhaps we can gather a bunch of resources from the net that would be useful for the cabs (Atari regulator boards etc.) There's a Maplins over the road that could prove useful for common parts too.

I really hope some more of you can make it, it would be great to meet some other collectors, especially more local people. Maybe we could do some live posting here (or even streaming) so others who don't get the chance to come can chat with us and perhaps give a bit of advice when needed?

Hi all, just a quick update on the cabs at the computer museum. I Met up with t-m yesterday (Hi Will, nice to meet you!) who is more experienced than myself, and gave them another look over...

Dependent on how many people come to the event we thought concentrating on one or two of the cabs was a good idea. As the Alien Syndrome already has a switcher and replacement roms have been kindly donated, that one seems a good candidate for trying first. The downside is that this game definitely needs a new monitor tube and probably chassis, so we are on the lookout for something suitable on behalf of Jason the owner. If anyone has any leads on this it would be great if you could post something up.

Some good news though is that the Gorf's WG 4600 chassis still has an intact horizontal width coil and Jason informed us he has a replacement diode for the Asteroids cocktail too. The tempest hasn't arrived yet but Jason said the game was in good condition but the screen expands over time (so the letters "E and M" from "Tempest" eventually fill the screen), perhaps some of you are familiar with this issue and give some pointers?

I could donate a hantrex 9000 monitor. It would have a faulty chassis as I don't have any spare working monitors.
Would this be the type you are looking for?

That's an amazing offer Steve! The chassis might be okay but no way to test it at present so it might be a case of swapping over the tube. Perhaps t-m or another could confirm if this is the correct type?
