Rav and I worked on my BFF cab - however it's not been working since it was moved, and low and behold one of the chips has fallen off the Hikaru motherboard. Now I know why these boardsets are known to be a POS - I am sure they are well designed - if the bloody chips didn't fall off!!

Damn things I've had one shipped to me with exactly the same heatsink/chip fallen off and another that's got the measles on the screen, black dots

All BGA chips too, I know Craig won't touch them , I asked him only the other day

Ken Westerfield may do them but I hear he wants $250 a BGA and that's if two more haven't fell off getting it to him

There are hundreds of little solder balls under the chip.
As the chip gets hot it causes the pcb around it to flex. Over time with contractions and expansion the solder starts to crack and fail.

Best repair is a re-ball with leaded solder. (£60-70 at a laptop repair shop)

I have seen similar with ps3 and xbox machines. It is possible to reflow the solder but its only a temp repair.

The chip should still be ok as long as you don't touch the underside with your hands.

Usual thought process for me: "What's that?" /Google /YouTube "Ooh, that's what it is!"

Very cool - hopefully you can get it working again. Can it not be reseated? Looks like a bit like a low/zero insertion force type thing?

Unless my eyes are tricking me the chip is still stuck to the sink?

I have re-balled + reflowed chips before, If you can get the template for this one I can do it for you.

No guarantees but I have fixed many laptops and consoles this way.

When the game gets hot the solder weakens over time unless you have support for the sink. Such an odd design?

Most computers clip sinks in place when they are mounted on the side like that.
