Time to check monitor transistors, @CoS72 came over to help and we got to work.

@Syrup2407 kindly shared some cheat sheet testing for testing transistors with a DMM. We knew that only one side of the transistors were the issue due to the screen collapse on the right hand side.

We immediately saw a clear issue with two of the four transistors confirming suspicions that this is where the issue was.

Using this diagram we started to test each transistor.

This universal testing device is absolute magic.

1000262756.jpg

What became immediately obvious though was a broken wire between transistor 1 and 2. Could it be that simple?

The wire was stripped and retinned and soldered back.

I dont think a video will ever do this game justice ,,, The intensity and vibrancy that's delivered is another level .. if you get the chance .. see this game . When the game was run with X fully restored ... I just stood and watched ... its Brilliant

The blackening kit has arrived. Looks a fairly simple process.

I didn't know such a thing existed until this thread. I've wish listed it on eBay for future purchase.

I dunk all my rusty bits into a tub of white vinegar to soak, and give things an occasional scrub with a toothbrush. It works amazingly well but usually also removes any blackening, leaving just bare metal.

Great stuff. The rinsing with water between each stage is imperative.
The blackening (part 2) is normally completed within 10 minutes but can be left longer if you take out and not fully done.
I set up 3 jam jars with each fluid and when I was doing 100’s just had a timer set up.

The main issue with using solely a rust remover is that the rust can sometimes come back especially if not fully removed., the metal is left either without a protective coating or can look completely dull.
This was the issue I had on some screws after using solely a specialist rust remover and then a month later looked like this.

If I don’t need to use straight away after the blackening process I keep in a zip bag . Saves money and also specialist screws ie button , Torx , tamper proof are not always easy to find a close match.
On a further note - if you wanted a particular finish on the bolt or screw head they Spray well after this process also. As regards spraying I would normally sink the screw thread into a piece of foam and spray that way.

Good Luck and have fun !

I’ve ordered the blackening kit as well, but mine has not arrived yet.

I’m glad you mentioned about rinsing with water between stages, I’ll make sure to do that.

One thing I wanted to ask; are all 3 solutions reusable? (ie, do you put left over solution back in the bottle after you have used it?).

As big10p mentioned, I also soak my bolts/screws in white vinegar (I actually did a load last night) and it does work well. However as you say, rust can creep back after a while so I’m hoping this blackening kit will help prevent that.

Sorry to slightly derail Olly’s thread, the Azatarac restore is looking amazing. A machine I’d love to try someday.

I should be on commission 😂
You can reuse a couple of times - obviously you are rinsing between each stage with water so after time the solution will then have small traces of water from the metal parts so becomes less pure and effective as ph changes. The parts just need to be submerged and covered so 50 ml goes a fairly long way and can do a lot of screws/ bolts etc.
Really enjoying the restoration @Alpha1 , incredible machine and story .when I am on a desktop computer later I will dare to rate the thread , can’t risk doing that on my mobile 😆

Well the blackening kit is AMAZING!!!!

After 2 days in derust juice
1000263150.jpg

Part 1 of the blackening kit. Alkaline cleaner. You do this for 10 minutes, I left for 20. And then a good rinse with water.
1000263151.jpg

Part 2. 10 minutes with the blackening solution. I did 35 minutes. Then a good rinse with water.
1000263166.jpg

Part 3, a 30 second dip in a watering oil and a final good rinse.

The results are incredible.
