Retro Madness :ROFLMAO:

People were paying £15-25 for the VHS before it was released on DVD okay fair enough
so then people were buying DVD, then bluray released which is far better picture than DVD so I got Bluray too
Only reason Bluray sold for that is because they only release them for short time and less people bought bluray in early days

Why on earth would you pay all that for VHS now, is anyone seriously going to watch it? the tape could be poor quality, some things are best left in the past and unless you watch on CRT it's gonna look awful anyway so what's the point, A few of your favourites on a shelf to remind you of the good old days in the video shop okay but paying nearly £40 for cheap shop copy is crazy VHS 5/6x price of DVD

Wonder what the price of VHS, DVD and Bluray will be in future when no one buys them because everyone streaming it all, probably CRT TV money :geek:

Didn't realise BMX Bandits was Australian!
I've not watched it since I was a kid so that's my excuse.

I think with BMX bandits it's just a collector thing mate, I can't really see anyone preferring VHS over Blu-Ray unless they have cataracts.

I still have what I call my nostalgia PC setup, it was the first PC that made me get into overclocking and understanding the benefits of high end components. Dunno how much it's worth today, but some of the bits in it were hard to come by back then, never mind today.

I still have a Sony GDM-W900 monitor (Sun Branded) that I use with it, that monitor weighs a ton! It's not as good as the FW900 but I'm happy with it. I remember having the proper Sony GDM-W900 and it developed a fault where the screen would tick and go black at times, I took the faulty Sony one to the tip as I managed to buy the Sun one for £50 quid. Going by what some people value them at these days, I could have made huge profits selling it even with it being faulty!

Love this thread - the irony of people moaning about prices of obsolete tech on a forum which has seen massive, self-generated price rises in arcade cabinets over the last 10 years seems to be lost on people.

I have fixed the original post for you...

"I can't be the only one, who's noticed the price of arcade machines go through the roof! Old cabinets that nobody wanted and were usually scrapped or sold for a couple of hundred, are now being sold with £1500 price tags! Put the word (untested) in front of the title and ask even more cash. Most are broken with knackered monitors, scabby paintwork, flakey boards, but that doesn't stop the price craze. "

Arcade machines have been climbing in price for years, as not many left. We are talking about people jumping on the back of it. If you bothered to read, they made MILLUONS of crt tv's. They are not rare! TV's have shot up in price, even in 1 year, not 10 like the arcade machines. There must be millions of TVs still out there in lofts and garages, so why the crazy prices?

I don’t think the similarities were missed by most of us. I wouldn’t pay £500 for a PCB (or think for one second arcade stuff isn’t full of obsolete stuff with minimal repair options). A Matsui for £50 is a strange to me as a Double Dragon for £200.

You could apply it to loads of old stuff.

Local sales still seem to be on the reasonable end (if you happen to be in an area where they pop up), but yes any CRT TV or monitor that pops up with postage as an option is now pulling in anywhere from £70-£400 depending on the model. The reason? Too many areas in the country where you simply don't see anything come up for sale, the South in particular is DIRE for anything retro because most got dumped ages ago and the rest end up at recycling centers which refuse to let you buy or take electronics.

That in turn has led to dealers sensing easy money, so in most areas now you'll see people posting ads everywhere where they "generously" say they'll take your old CRT off you for free (and then turn around and flip them on eBay for £80+), which is even further limiting the supply and is now even making the unwanted RF only 14" portable TVs pull in decent money.

This is exactly what is happening. Decent CRTs are becoming a scarce resource sadly.. yes there were millions made... but they are / have been destroyed in their millions too over the last decade. Always a pile of them at tips etc. The average person never wants to store a bulky CRT especially as the change to digital TV meant there wasn't much point keeping them as backups for your typical TV user.

Like a lot of old stuff, you wish more were saved back in the day, that you’d collected (or hung onto) a few more yourself and that the internet wasn’t there to ruin your chances of a bargain from an unsuspecting seller 🤪

It's one of those things, I understand how lightguns work on crt, but it's still some voodoo stuff that someone figured it out.

Even ainsley Harriet was at it

I remember an old 14" telly I had that I absolutely loved, very unique colour. Took a while to track it down as I couldn't remember the name. Turns out it was a company called Tatung. Probably not great quality but I'd absolutely love to get my old "jade green" back.

check out the prices!
