Solved Cruisin USA - New Power Supply with 115vac 230vac switch

Hi everyone,
My Cruisin USA Deluxe kept on rebooting randomly. The maximum game time was about 1 minute. This happened since I have bought it.
I couldn’t get the right voltages on the power supply, so I have bought a new one.

But on the new one I can’t get more than about 4V on the +5V when I measure on the jamma connector and power supply.
I have measured AC (L) and AC (N) input on the power supply and only measured 127V while I expected 230V.
The power supply has got a switch for 115V input voltage and 230V input voltage. Currently it is set on 230V since that is the voltages coming from the wall outlet.

My question:
Could it be that the transformer is bad, or is it normal that on some European Arcades the input voltage on the power supply is 127V? Should I set the switch on the power supply to 115V so it is more close to the actual input voltage on the power supply (even though I am in Europe)?

(The old power supply did not have a switch to select the input voltage)

follow the wiring from the psu input and see where it's getting 127v from.
i'm curious if it's got a big isolation transformer in it.

It comes from the transformer and the manual which I have got from the internet says purple and purple yellow are 120 VAC.

Did I bought the wrong power supply? I am not sure if it is safe to change the jumpers on the transformer as it might result in wrong voltages for other parts like the monitor.
Also I am scared to turn the switch of the psu to 115vac, since the input is a bit higher and I don’t know if the difference in frequency between Europe and the USA will cause problems.

what you would expect is 230 into the transformer and then 120v out to chassis, power supply and marquee light.
You will need to get your multimeter onto the power supply ac and see what its actaully reading

Ahh now I think of it: back in the day there came 220V from the wall outlet, nowadays 230V. Perhaps that is causing the difference of 7V

Yeh DO NOT switch it to 115 and input 240 (230 - old school!). You need to use you mustimeter and follow wiring as above.

I measure 127vac on the input which comes from the transformer. Probably this is what it should be. Manual says 120vac, but this might be different now because the voltage which comes from the wall outlet has been changed.

but you said the power supply is switched to 230 whereas if your ac input is 127 it should be set to 115
you should turn the 5v right down before powering on after you switch otherwise it be very high

I didn’t dare to do that as I was not sure if this was safe to do because they mentioned 115 is for USA and 230 for Europe, 127V is 12V above the 115V and there are differences in frequency between the USA and Europe, not sure if that would cause a problem.

well that would cause your low 5v situation, powering 230 at 127
the power supply should have the range to take 127 at 115 setting
if you are worried then disconnect the game boards but leave some kind of load on the 5v line, then check the voltages

Iits likely your transformer is jumpered to 220v input but your supply is above 230v, what does the ac input to the cab actually read?

I don’t know where to measure that other than in the wall outlet (230V - Netherlands) .
See pictures, from te outlet it goes straight into the blackbox (for me 😊).
It ends up in purple wires with a connector on it which goes to the psu.

I will turn the adjustmentknob low and switch it to 115vac.

Thanks! Seems to be fixed!
Changed the switch to 115vac, the adjustment-knob is very sensitive now… I have set it to 4.95V and 12.08V.
Played two levels without a reboot.

you should have slightly above 5v at the game board, 5.05 to 5.1 would be good but of its working then just leave it

Ah yh I had it around 5.05V but then it was 12.2V at the +12V terminal.. then I turned it a bit down. Don’t know if it is ok to go above the 12V…
As you see I don't take risks easily 😄

the 12v is not critical, the 5v is
i have seen 12v running as high as 14v on some supplies without issue
