I recently imported a parcel from Japan using Fedex and followed the advice on this webpage:

http://blog.adamowen.co.uk/dont-pay-fedexs-customs-advancement-fees/

I tweaked the email template the guy suggested using in order to make it feel less aggressive and I got an email reply a couple of days later saying the advancement fee has been credited so all I had to pay was the VAT.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your query regarding invoice 38xxxxxxx.

Having reviewed the above mentioned invoice, we can now confirm that a
partial credit of 12 UKL has been raised, leaving an amount still due on
the invoice of 17.98 UKL FedEx will not issue a revised invoice and therefore we look forward to receiving payment
for the remaining balance on this invoice.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on.

Yours Faithfully,

Aishwarya Thiyagarajan

Bit of a bump for this..has the rules changed again now we've left the EU?
I received a small ransom letter from Parcelforce this morning, the interesting part was that the country of origin is Germany.

I was going to give them a ring on Monday to query it, and then it came to be about January 31st been and gone etc..

What takes the piss is the amount they're after, £3.03 import VAT and a £12 Clearance fee!!
£15.03 please.. I don't even know what the parcel is!

The £12 handling/clearance charge is an absolute pi$$ take. It hasn't cost them anything. You have to collect the parcel yourself despite paying for delivery!!

I generally try and buy from UK only now

I've given up trying to work out how this all works, TBH. I've just received a couple of packages from the states that sailed through customs no problem, no charge. I think Customs must just pick things at random to slap a charge on.

Oh yeah duty is hit and miss. But the fact that this parcel is from Germany and I've been charged. Before brexit, we could import from the EU without any duty charges, and now brexit has been and gone, have the rules changed so we get charged on import duty now?

Like ordering from the US?

Probably is something to do with brexit, but still doesn't makes sense as the USA has obviously never been part of the EU, and I didn't get charged. Like I say, I've given up trying to work it out.

Hoping to purchase a synth panel from Sweden soon. In the past year or so I've given up purchasing anything from Japan or the USA. Must have been hit with fees about six times in a row on smallish packages

We're in transition agreement, NOTHING is supposed to change yet with regards to goods crossing the channel from Europe. I've had numerous parcels this month with correct (high) values marked on them from places in Europe like Germany and Bulgaria.

Talk about timing - I just got one for something shipped from the Netherlands - what the f**k is going on?

Edit: worth noting that I also can't think of anything I'm expecting from NL.

Edit2: actually this one was from play-asia in HK, this is supposed to be their prepaid duty option so something there is f**ked up and it probably isn't royal mails fault.
