Due to a house move I've had to put my cabs in storage so haven't been able to crack on with any of my restoration projects and I'm starting to get a bit twitchy
smiley36.gif

So instead I'm going to revisit some of my favourite restos that I haven't shown here before.

First up is my Euro Dig Dug.

Here are some pics I took when it first arrived. The monitor had
vertical collapse but it appeared to be running the game ok, however it
was impossible to tell if there were any pcb issues.

Cab is good
and solid, few little touch ups needed here and there. Inside is full o'
crap and it needs a thorough clean. Obviously the control panel needs
some work and a new overlay. All the metalwork is rusty and will need
stripping back & repainting.

The sound works but is distorted
so that will need looking at, and none of the coin lights or start
button lights are working. Lots to do, but should come out very nice.

The very first thing I wanted to do was get some proper feet on it,
every time I moved it you could hear it rubbing on the floor and see
little flakes of the wood left behind.

Made some room and flipped it on its back. Easy to see the problem, but at least the base is good and solid!

resto_digdug_01.jpg

Broke in to my supply of new teflon feet & t-nuts.

resto_digdug_02.jpg

Old feet out with the help of a lump hammer
smiley3.gif

resto_digdug_03.jpg

They are well f*cked! New feet fitted, no more scraping the base and it makes the cab nice and easy to shift around now.

resto_digdug_04.jpg

Monitor went off to have: A cap kit. Dry joints reflowed. Fix blown vertical output transistor. Fix blown frame IC.

resto_digdug_05.jpg

Now we have a lovely crisp picture, and also can see the game is running 100%

resto_digdug_06.jpg

WhiteComet has been doing some great vector work on the CPO, just a few
little bits left to tweak and it will be ready for printing

Got started on the cleanup.

Loom completely removed:
resto_digdug_07.jpg

Power brick:
resto_digdug_08.jpg

Old T-Molding removed:
resto_digdug_09.jpg

ARII, this will be given a going over as it's the likely suspect for the sound problem.
resto_digdug_10.jpg

resto_digdug_11.jpg

Cab is now empty.
resto_digdug_12.jpg

resto_digdug_13.jpg

All inside areas of the cab have been cleaned up and polished.

resto_digdug_14.jpg

resto_digdug_15.jpg

resto_digdug_16.jpg

Did the sides - First a good polish, then a rub with Novus 2, then
filled in scratches with some furniture touch-in paint, then novus 1,
and another polish.

Before:
resto_digdug_17.jpg

After, almost perfect now:
resto_digdug_18.jpg

Other
side had a massive scratch down the middle, there wasn't any way to
fill it perfectly but did my best. It's nowhere near as obvious in
reality and looks much better.
resto_digdug_19.jpg

Gave the loom a good scrubbing
resto_digdug_20.jpg

And straight out on the washing line with it!
resto_digdug_21.jpg

Vector work on the CPO has been finished, thanks very much Jason
smiley20.gif

I
printed out a draft copy and made a few small adjustment for spacing
and altered the colours a little to match the what I've got left of the
original CPO.

I will be sending this off to the printers today so hopefully it will come back and fit properly!

resto_digdug_22.jpg

Power brick cleaned up.

Before:
resto_digdug_08.jpg

After:
resto_digdug_23.jpg

Bought replacement screws, bolts & washers to replace the rusty ones.
resto_digdug_24.jpg

Photo of the new CPO draft print on the actual panel, old overlay behind - it's a very good match
smiley1.gif

Had to move the pump text and start button graphics but that was it.

resto_digdug_25.jpg

Thought I'd better strengthen the front base of the cab as it was
flaking a bit, so flipped it on its back again. Gave any loose areas a
good brush of pva and had to get a bit constructive with my clamps!

New CPO has arrived:
resto_digdug_27.jpg

Hearty thanks to WhiteComet for his time spent working on the vector image - I owe you a few pints sir
smiley20.gif

It's come out superbly.

resto_digdug_28.jpg

Next
to what's left of my original you can see the colours are spot on! Was
well worth spending time getting draft prints done to match it up
smiley1.gif

resto_digdug_29.jpg

That arriving gave me a push to get on with prepping the metalwork for some de-rusting, and fresh paint.

resto_digdug_30.jpg

New T-Molding gets fitted. Makes such a difference to a cab putting nice
new shiny stuff on, and so simple to fit as well - apart from having to
flip the cab in its back then on its side on your own of course
smiley36.gif

resto_digdug_31.jpg

Start refitting the loom and pcb's. I've used all new screws and bolts for all the fixings so far.

resto_digdug_32.jpg

All done, here's how it looks today. Not too shabby
smiley1.gif

resto_digdug_33.jpg

Time to rebuild the coin doors.
Unfortunately there were a lot of
missing parts when the cab arrived - the switches and lamp holders were
present, as was the wiring but no mounting plates or actual reject/entry
slots, or any locks.

A rummage through my spares and I couldn't believe that I'd actually kept the exact bits needed from a cab long, long gone!
smiley1.gif

These
things are a pain in the ass to rebuild! Had to take the door off and
put it together on the floor, but now it's all in (minus mechs) and I'm
very pleased to see it back how it should be.

resto_digdug_34.jpg

resto_digdug_35.jpg

Metalwork has all been given a fresh coat of matt black paint and looks infinitely better.

resto_digdug_36.jpg

Cleaned up, touched up and reattached the monitor shroud.

resto_digdug_37.jpg

Top part refitted to cab, makes a massive difference!
Bezel given a good polish with novus and it's come out well.

resto_digdug_38.jpg

Time to apply the new CPO.

Get it in to the correct position
checking the button holes line up and the edges are straight from top to
bottom. I'm happy to see it is the right size with just a few mm
overlap on either side.

resto_digdug_39.jpg

Move
the clips down and cut away a section of the backing paper. Good spray
of water then apply, you can peel and stick a few times to get it
correctly positioned. Once it's right squeegee out the water.

resto_digdug_40.jpg

Once
the first section is applied it's easier to do the rest. Take your time
on the curves and work a few mm at a time peeling the backing away as
you go. Last bit applied and a little bit to trim from the hinges. Move
the clips to the top and bottom areas where it's most likely to peel.

resto_digdug_41.jpg

Nice new craft blade to cut out the button holes and I can stick everything back together.

Here it was when I got it:
rtod_may_bc19.jpg

And here it is now:
resto_digdug_42.jpg

resto_digdug_43.jpg

Control Panel reattached to the cab:
resto_digdug_44.jpg

Cash box & service panel mounted. Think I'm about done with this one!

So here it is all finished, I'm really proud of this one, it's been the
most difficult resto I've done so far I think as it's needed work doing
to every part of the cab. It's come out better than I was expecting.

Big
thanks to Ross Hamilton for the cab, WhiteComet for the vector work on
the cpo, tb2000 for sorting the monitor and anyone else who gave advice
on certain bits & pieces, as always my restorations take full
advantage of the community!

A nice thorough job as usual! 2 Thumbs up! I spent many credits on a Dig-Dug back in the olden days in Dayvilles Birmingham!

Keep up the resto coolness!

Bloody hell. I forgot you had this! That's my old cab (before Ross had it).

I really wish I'd had the resources (and skills) to get it in this shape. What a beauty....well played mate

I forgot about this! Great work Olly. You learn so much in this hobby and pretty much any cab can be saved and made minty :) The difference between the original internal shots and the rebuild is like night and day. Damn; you've made me want to go and clean things ;) I'm sure I got a shot at this and turned you down in a moment of madness :(

Sadly I did have to sell it not long after finishing it so I could get my Star Wars cockpit in, but it went to someone local with a first-dibs proviso, so it will come home again if I get the chance
