Sounds like you have found the problem.

I think so... I don't have a spare 8255 so will have to order one but I think it's worth the gamble.

Socketed 1E and replaced the removed chip in socket just in case it had been a dodgy solder joint but same behaviour... will have to park this now until I get a replacement part. I have ordered "D8255AC-2" from EBay... hopefully that is compatible?

I put a logic probe on pin 38 and pin 37... the results were slightly weird... pin 38 appears HI and pulled low with a Button press but does not flow through the PIA, pin 37 seems to be pulsing or at least have a lot of noise rather than being hi or lo. Something weird.

Just tried... with 1E removed.... Logic probe shows HI on pin 38 and pin 37 unless the appropriate button is pressed in which case that pin is pulled LO; no noisy pulsing.
The i8255 is a bi-directional device so maybe mine has decided that one of those pins is an output; in any case I'm pretty sure it is misbehaving.
Will be a few days before I get a replacement.

Title screen is back in action. Funny that... I think that must have been broken since before I bought it.

Still need to sort out the incorrectly burnt colour PROM...

Doesn't seem to look quite like MAME... weird. I think I am probably done though... everything seems to work.

Now the $1M question... should I convert it to Super Cobra and then on to a phillmurr multigame?

Decided that I didn't really like hunchback!



A set of ROMs, a PROM and a Z80 and we are back to Scramble...




I'll keep the Hunchback PlayPack, ROM set and PROM just in case... just an easy swap.

I read that Hunchback was originally meant to be based on Robin Hood, hence the soldiers and the castle ramparts rather than a cathedral setting. But Robin Hood came out a bit lumpy and they decided to call it Hunchback instead! Not sure if this is really true but the graphics do support this. So it’s not Esmerelda but Maid Marion being rescued?
I played this a lot on the Spectrum, reminded me a lot of Pitfall.
