Woah that's amazing news, would be insane for it to end up in the blackpool, keeping it local! Also being in the mx5 community myself, I'll keep an eye out if there's any cars being sold for scrap with a decent full interior including the original seats and steering wheel :)

Just wanted to chime in and say congrats to all for making this possible. Having the Full Scale Version of Ridge Racer dumped and soon playable in MAME is OUTSTANDING!!!

On that front, besides the triple screen support, are there any other differences between this version and the traditional sit down deluxe/normal version of RR? And do you think with this one having triple screen support, that perhaps it can be hacked to run in stereoscopic 3D, and in turn run in VR?

Differences... it's (mildly) interesting.

There's 3 boardsets to do triple screen. The centre does all I/O and the outers are just cameras.

The game has a few different menus, but otherwise it's the same.

Key graphical differences are:

Miata for the player car

Speedo/rev gauge isn't shown as it's in the actual car

FOV is slightly different, as its the location of the time - so you can see it without looking at the ceiling.

There's also a 3-screen sit-down (undumped!) that is pretty-much just the standard game using 3 boardsets for 3 screens.

But for V.R., the stock game would be enough to hack as you're just moving the camera around.

Someone's already had a very impressive attempt at porting it to PS VR:

RIDGE RACER VR - YouTube

I'm assuming they recoded the game and nicked the assets from the arcade version .

I'd like to get it into proper MAME, rather than just my hacky 'jb' build so it won't be imminent (will get my brother to help with the massive tidy-up required and to remove some of the bugs).

It's nice that the game was able to be saved.

Would something like an overlay be able to be used to show the speedo?

It would be nice to try this out on a superwide monitor if it ever sees the light of day in Mame.

Overlays would be possible, but the output data needs to be found and decoded first.

As for playing the game, expect it to be very slow as you need to emulate 3x System 22s for it to run. So if you're struggling with 1, 3 will be slide show territory! :D

John it sounds like a lot of work to get going. I know you mentioned 3x board link up was proving difficult.

It's just a hobby. Don't feel any pressure to spend countless hours of your time working on this.

Ah OK.

I've got a Ryzen 5950X, would all 3 System 22 boards be running on one core?

No idea if Mame takes advantage of multicore for something like this.

Cheers.

MAME might as well be one core, but my hacked build uses three instances of MAME talking via network packets, so it spreads it over multiple cores (or multiple PCs)
So yeah, decent Ryzen would be 60FPS

Oh and 3D acceleration isn’t used in MAME, other than HLSL effects if you enable them.John Bennett2022-04-16 13:34:03

Yes, that's my VRChat world! It's using the older SDK so it's a little rudimentary but it's actually come a long way since that video. I'm currently working on a VR port of Daytona using the new SDK which basically lets you code in C# so it's a lot more advanced and closer to the arcade. Here's a very recent build:

Anyways, I'm real happy to hear that RR Full Scale will finally be in MAME! I'd like to get the alternate sign textures and put them in my world as an optional toggle once the roms are available :)

Hopefully when Daytona is done, I can work on revamping the Ridge Racer world with the new SDK which would allow for cool things like drifting, leaderboards, you name it! I already have a very early version of Rave Racer ported too.
