[ukvac] LCD Supergun
Do any of you guys have experience in building a Supergun-type-affair
with a built in LCD Monitor?

The price of these monitors is coming down sufficiently to make this
viable.

In my opinion the main issue is whether the output from the gameboard
is good enough for an LCD monitor to sync to (they may be more fussy
than ordinary monitors).

Also some LCD monitors do not have an RGB+sync input but will accept
PAL/NTSC so I suppose a side issue is whether those PAL/NTSC converter
chips do a good job with poor signals.

Any views gratefully received.

Peter

Now, if gameboards became as small as monitors have become, we could
have a handheld arcade machine!

Hang on, isn't this the gameboy? :)

If i've read my rgvac deja stuff correctly then I don't think that you could sync correctly

to a VGA monitor (either cathode or LCD) however if you buy a LCD TV type thing (Maplins

are selling a 4" display in their current sale I think) then you should be able to connect

to the arial socket thing (whatever it's called). A SCART socket is obviously a better bet,

but I don't know whether these come as standard on a portable unit.

If you're serious about this then check out deja news for the VGA threads in rgvac for a more detailed

summary.

Cheers

I wasn't thinking of using those flat screen VGA monitors (too
expensive anyway) but, as you suggest, I was thinking of using the ones
that are available in personal TV's. Those sorts of LCD monitors are
also quite easily available in the OEM market, some accept composite
video, some can even accept analogue RGB+sync. Whether I use a hacked
personal TV or an OEM module will come down to a question of cost.

I only have experience with the VGA screens but wouldn't resolutions and
scan rates be a bit of an issue ?. The VGA displays are very fussy. In my
experience LCD's aren't that great at handling fast moving objects,
something else to consider. I would be interested to hear the results of
any experiments. Imagine how much lighter your average JAMMA cab would be
if you fitted an LCD screen :) .
