Looking at buying a new car

New cars have VAT and used cars don't which is the biggest depreciator in year one.
You buy a £50k car £10 k is VAT which has nothing to do with the vehicles value so the minute its registered you lose the VAT plus another chunk as its now used and has an additional owner.

Joking apart the main reason I buy most things including cars new is because luckily at the moment I can and because of the warranty (unless it’s made by Samsung in which case it’s not worth the paper it’s written on)
I’ve had enough secondhand stuff in my life ( vintage arcade and gaming gear doesn’t count 😁) that I will always buy new when I can and fuck the expense.
id rather not have to worry about failures down the line ( especially with very expensive equipment) and my experience with 3rd party warranty providers hasn’t been great.
Other than a couple of Korean manufacturers, most new cars come with 3 years so if you buy 2 years old not long after that you’ll be shopping around or paying the manufacturer to extend and I’ve got enough going on that I’d rather not be dealing with the ball ache.
Anyway if no one bought new cars, you’d never be able to enjoy your second hand bargains 😁

Yeah probably. If you have the skills to work on your own vehicles then it's probably not a bad idea, but I don't and modern cars are insanely complicated and expensive to fix. Buying a few months old is probably the sweet spot for missing that initial depreciation hit and still having a good amount of warranty left

I've worked on my own cars for years, driven 'bangers' and even I'd I get as new as possible (that 'sweet spot' mentioned above) so there's some warranty and have even risked it with the official manufacturer extended warranty (that'll pay out the value of the car).
I think the on-board chargers and inverters are covered with the battery warranties, but there's tonnes of stuff to go wrong on cars of all variations. I knew someone landed with a £9k bill because the crankshaft thrust was worn in a 3 year old Vauxhall. Luckily the manufacturer paid.

It's absolutely everyone's choice in what they want to buy or rent as most these days but having had new cars every 3 years over 18 years span and numerous hire cars, loosing the company car after this time I wasn't gutted in anyway, the only one I didn't want to go back after 3 years was the 2007 Smax which was brilliant for picking up arcade cabs (Reason I got it) and a big factor was after that we were reduced to choice of either Peugeot 308sw which is one of the most awful looking things ever or a low spec Skoda Estate oh and a Van which they all have now 
When I got to choose the Smax I did have to pay £30 a month to upgrade to that but the tax on company cars was getting a bit of a wage killer, I had quite a choice of cars that last of the good years, looked at Passat's, Mazda's, Fords and I could have even had Ford Galaxy (20K then) but I had to think about parking in town centres all the time.
If I had my Choice it would have been the Honda Accord Aerodeck with Electric Tailgate but Honda never on the huge list to pick from Pretty sure if i had one I'd never have wanted that too go back.
If anything having new cars made me miss buying something I really wanted and being able to fit what entertainment system in I wanted, I never had a decent one in any company car, Ford MP3 Sony system that didn't save track you were at when engine turned off and would throw up cd error after 2 hours driving Sat Navs that are hopeless as many postcodes don't exist on them like the Shitroen vans now, nothing was to my liking.
I did worry I would find an old car crap to drive after all these new cars but wasn't the case either, ones I have drive every bit as good as any of the new cars I had and better than many.
The novelty of that next new car faded away after a few months of driving them like it wouldn't matter if you were still in the previous one, unless the previous one was a Vauxhall so I don't miss new cars at all and love having something I've now owned for 10+ years, know the car well, repair it and customise it to my liking

Me brother had a Montego Turbo in late 80's, I remember the day when he jet washed the engine and then started it, a bit after HUGE Bang, it blew the backbox open at the seam
They look quite good the Turbo ones, I saw comments on youtube about them and people asking why they had a Turbo but no fuel injection like the MG EFI, I would have thought the easy answer to that was Cost, was surprised when found the Renault 5 Turbo wasn't fuel injected.

I had a Metro Turbo at 18 and a Montego Turbo at 20, can still remember the reg numbers ,A489 GPK ,D985 BOY.
Living next to the Rover factory ( bits on tap for pennies ) and working at a body shop meant both were beautiful, never had the Maestro , skipped that and went onto Astra GTE 16v and Sierra Cosworths ( G915 YLA ) before I started getting company vehicles.
Funny how I can remember the reg numbers of cars I owned 30 years ago but not where I put my wallet or what I watched on TV yesterday.

Oh come on , You are driving an Audi hair drier!!, when you get out do you automatically have a blue rinse? 😆 I'm looking to get back into breaking down on a bi weekly basis but fixing it with a hammer , flat blade screwdriver and a tube of instant gasket in a lay by rather than a laptop in a swanky workshop and and a data cable to Germany.

Wondered if you had, those 1st two films were class, Brother had trouble holding on to the Fords, Escort RS Turbo stolen out garage, last Cosworth stolen outside his girlfriends, attempted theft of his RS Focus he has now.
It's crazy, I can remember one of the Reg but some of the silly things you remember from 40 years ago yet I can't remember anyone's names in a movie I just watched
Jinxed myself saying about my old car being reliable, went to pick up something today, got 20 miles of the 110m and started playing up, thought oh crap, then engine light on but ran okay still once ECU adjusted itself just can't use lean burn if that's on but at least it don't put me in Gimp mode like new cars as still drove perfect, got there okay, when I left for home no engine light all the way, ECU has built in Diagnostics and it was Throttle Position Sensor error, suppose 27 years ain't bad before it having issue, will see how it goes and buy a replacement ready
