Personally I would of pre-tinned all the parts to be soldered, secondly you show an alternative point and on the other pad enough area to scrape and tin to connect a second temp battery while the main is replaced, saves all the hassle of working on a powered up cart

Yeah. I realized I didn't pre-tin that one pad after I had already removed the battery. In one section I do show to pre-tin the pad beforehand.

You don't need to use the power-on method but I have done both and prefer this one. Years ago I tried to do the helper battery method and my success rate was only about 50%. I didn't know whether the cart was extra sensitive to the battery voltage when adding a second battery so I just began doing the power-on method. And is has evolved into this over the years. I have only been unsuccessful with one cart in the last two years and it didn't die during the actual swap. It died due to pure stupidity.... :p

The two carts I sent (mine and Porchy) should be with you soon. Tracking says they have hit the good old USA! Hopefully USPS isn't affected by the Government shut down - but probably is!!

I was thinking actually (and not knowing this cart system) would it not be best all round finding out which pins on the cartridge are the voltage rails and just providing power to them while changing the battery leaving everything else alone?

Yes you could do that but using a pcb works just fine. I like to see if I have killed my cart. lol. That's why I use the monitor. It's kinda like a canary at the bottom of a mine shaft. This method works very well. There's a reason why people are scared to change these batteries. The pcbs are finicky, and it can be tricky.

I'll be looking for them! The USPS is not affected by the shutdown because it is not technically government funded.

Funny story. I've had those wire cutters for years. I actually used them to cut open the cable box where the cable comes into my house so I could install a MoCa filter. I then forget about them outside for about three weeks. I looked all over for those damn things. Then one morning I was taking a leak and I looked out the window and saw them out of the corner of my eye on the porch railing. They were rusty, or course, so I doused them with WD-40 and opened and closed them until they moved freely again. So I refuse to buy a new one until they are useless. lol.
