i think Nostalgia plays a big part in the N64, its a terrible console with maybe less than 10 decent games, i didnt ever own one but own a few now with about 120 games, most are absolute shite

We’ve been spoilt by modern frame rates.

Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Goldeneye were genre defining and Mario and Zelda hold up really well today.

There is a lot of shovel ware but I bought about 12 games (on import BITD) but the only dud in there was Turok really.

i love Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo and Mario Kart, they still hold up even today for me

i've not found a great else though and personally thing Mario 64 may be the most overated game of all time, its absolute garbage, i can imagine it probably was groundbreaking back then, but not having played it at the time and visiting it decades later...its naff

Insanity. It doesn’t have the library of SNES but it was genuinely mind blowing at the time. The controller was perfectly in keeping with the new era of console gaming by being different to anything before it and was probably specifically designed that way for Mario 64’s camera function.

Not to mention that Ocarina of Time is one of the greatest if not greatest games ever made and still holds up despite being at the forefront of polygon graphics.

There’s at least 20 games I could name off the top of my head that I’d happily play today. Including some lesser know gems like Vigilante 8 and Mischief Makers.

It’s not widely respected by the PlayStation lot though 😘

I must say I don't remember it looking that amazing at the time. It was clearly a little bit better than the PS1 for graphics, but the 4k of memory for storing texture maps was a big shortfall that made things look rather plain and smeared in vaseline.
But, even with a PC and 3DFX, I did envy stuff like Goldeneye, Wave Race and Mario 64.

I've got the N64 controller for the Switch. I got it out of curiosity. I can see why it's ok for stuff designed for it, but for general Switch stuff, don't bother as, as well as the odd layout, it's missing loads of buttons like X and Y, rendering games you can't remap useless.

I wasn't too big of a fan of the N64 controller when I first tried one, both of my controllerss were pretty gritty feeling. Last year though, I bought one of those steel stick bowls and while it didn't improve the range of the stick (one of my controllers is totally screwed in that regard), it really helped with the grittiness, made it feel nice and smooth like a modern stick.
Doesn't change the fact that you need 3 hands to use it though lol
