I've been searching, but couldn't find if this is a Chihiro type 3 board. Can you identify it?

The pcb's and loom look 100% genuine.

Agreed, all original. The looms even have the Japanese style cable ties! Chihiro Type 3, which interestingly is not JAPAN region even though imported from Japan. Matters not as it's easy to region change these.

For me, these cabs look original Japanese with a few aesthetics from the land of China (decals and possibly one or two lightboxes).

Depends what they're asking but as far as artwork goes you don't need to worry - 85% is now available in great quality repro and the final 15% is not far off.

If it was me I'd be asking what monitors are in there- HUGE difference between the lovely Nanao and the below par Sanwa fitted in UK/euro/USA cabs!!

edit: I'm 99.9% sure all the sideart is China repro on those four cabs. Maybe it all is - they import the cabs, tart them up with new stickers and Bobs yer uncle..

The AGS web page actually says: English Outrun 2 SP will only run on the USA/Export Region.
I've only ever seen one Japanese language Outrun 2 SP outside Japan, and that was in Hong Kong, so that makes sense. It was in a kids' arcade in a shopping mall, and it looked like they had imported it themselves.
I'll ask about the monitors, thanks. To me the most important is that they don't have much burn-in. I've mostly played on Nanao. The only Euro OR2 I've seen had terrible monitors, and I thought that was a coincidence until now.

I'm wondering if all the red plastics are Chinese, who knows. But I'm willing to compromise if I get the cabs at a reasonable price. And as you say, I can replace the stickers and it will look (mostly) correct.

I really appreciate all the help I'm getting from you guys. I've asked in other forums, and they are all like "why don't you just buy European Outrun 2 cabs?". Because they are not the same at all!

I'm hoping that my dream is finally coming true.

I'm with you, Japanese all the way where possible. On first glance it all looks the same as the UK/euro stuff, but it's the subtle differences that make all the difference to the discerning Sega man/geek

So far, I've noticed the following..

Jap bases are better.

Jap seat cushions are nicer and more comfy.

Jap plastic seat back covers are a cooler shape.

Jap cabs have Nanao monitors (I think), which are nicer.

Jap artwork is better quality.

Jap wiring is neater and tidier (uber

)

Jap machines come as singles which incorporate the hugely cool lightbox and pop card.

Have I missed anything..?

As for US cabs - let's not go there

Regarding the monitors, Andy will know for sure what Jap machines had originally, but I'm sure they were Nanao (MS2932??). I have replaced the Sanwa 29E31S units in mine with Nanao MS2932 from an F355 cab. Although I never had any burn, I'd take Nanao any day of the week as the picture quality just sings and is perfect for the blue-sky Sega style. I would genuinely take a little burn on a Nanao in preference to a completely non-burn Sanwa.

Although I've seen China copies of the UK/euro seat back plastic I've not seen a Jap style copied - unless this is what's on view here..??

Isn't this the Jap style copied?

It's difficult to see on the picture, but the subtle "dent" around the middle plug of the seat back looks less prominent than on the original. Maybe it's just the angle or lighting.

Copy (the above picture):

When I looked through my pictures I also found another base sticker. I know that this is a genuine Japanese Sega cab. Have you seen this sticker before? Chinese custom graphics added later?

OK, these are all just details. Am I the only one who find it interesting?

Another thing, the Chinese have successfully copied the Japanese padded seat. I've seen it and tested it myself. I couldn't see any difference.

You might have a point with the seat plastic, but I think it's too hard to tell for sure with these pictures. Anything is possible of course if they've got the tooling or have copied the tooling..

The US cabs have a Jap style seat back plastic. They are very good, but the plastic isn't as thick and they have an extra mounting hole on the gullbox/shoulder area of the moulding.

I've seen the seat cushions, but wasn't sure they were copies. If they are then they look identical to the originals - I'd like to get some black ones for my cab as Sega no longer stock them.

Regarding the base lid sticker - there is an original OR2 style sticker under there, the middle section with OR2SP logo has been stuck over the top

I don't think many are interested in this stuff, but I certainly am

I've now had the pleasure to strip + reassemble Euro and Japanese cabs, as Gary said Japanese cabs are far far superior.

A couple more observations on the differences between Jp + Euro:

The powdercoated finish seems much more resilient on Jp cabs, especially on the frame section.
Thicker gauge metal is used for most of the metalwork on Jp cabs, I've had Euro cabs where the small side brackets on the frame have bent which made lining up the holes for the side panels difficult before noticing they were bent, try bending those brackets on a Japanese cab!
smiley36.gif

The castors are much better quality on Jp cabs, I've had Euro cabs where castors have collapsed/wheels shattered.
Underneath the Jp frame where the steering wheel sits there is a flap that holds the remote board, undo 2 screws and you can sit with the remote board in front of the screen which is much easier for adjustments. Normally the euro cab requires the back to be taken off to get access to the remote board.
The seat baseplate has a locking mechanism on later Jp cabs. (I'm not sure if some Euro cabs have the same mech though)

There are probably more subtle differences, but those are what I've noticed from my short time with them.

Cheers.

Revisiting the "dent" on the seat back. The only Chinese copy I've seen in person had the dent reversed, it was more like a bulge. The copy cabinet picture I've posted before looks the same.

ch-dimple.jpg

I'm now fairly certain that the cabs are all original, but the Chinese have "refurbished" it and put on all new decals. The condition of the base etc looks very good, which makes me believe that they must have repainted it in the process. I'm hoping that they didn't replace the monitors.
I've seen Chinese suppliers tear off the stickers before:

I may have been too positive about the China copy seat cushion that I mentioned, but here it is:

The monitors should be toshiba's in a jap outrun2.

Thanks for the info - would these have been the Toshiba PFX?

Yes, in Japan from late 2003 most 29" CRTs games (even Namco/Taito/Konami) where fitted with Tosh PFXs, in UK we got lovely Sanwa's - with known dodgy china tubes.

Japan Sanwa's are lot nicer as they use Toshiba CRT tubes and have same curve as Nanao MS29-32 and offer pretty much the same picture quality.

Oh to have the same quality components over here that the Japanese fitted in their cabs! I guess we got the crap because it's a known fact that British chavs like vandalising arcade machines - better that a China CRT gets smashed than a quality Toshiba PFX!!

On the subject of Jap OutRun2 cabs, was the small plexi uou see fitted to the top corner of the lightbox on Jap cabs part of the topper assembly or some sort of optional part..?

I like it
