Cricky, you've gone to town on that! Did any part of the restoration cause you have any issues? (Such has remembering where everything goes back together or lifting the frame back onto the base?).

Simply amazing.

I can only imagine how much time it takes to do all this work, testing/adjusting, finding parts etc. kudos!

It's really just a slightly larger scale than any other Cab restoration.
Rule 1. Bag up the parts in zip up freezer bags and write on it exactly what it was and where it went.
I do cheat by getting help when lifting the big bits around.

The PCBs are something that worry me the most.
That's why I leave it to the experts.
Thanks again, John and Mark.

The frame rollers have a hard life over the years,
but when stripped down they were still in great shape once cleaned up and greased.

Absolutely outstanding.
Out of interest, I see a lot of 120V components in there. Do you have to use a step down transformer or have you converted it to use 240V AC?

Yes!! Freezer bags and a suitable pen is exactly the move!!

You can list what’s in the bag, and instructions on exactly where it went too.

What was that John?
You wanted more pictures?
Well, I have a few left of the Knackered Sound Amp,
but you must be sick of looking at them by now.

Coin box and door refitted.
Yes, that does have 619532 on the coin counter!!!
This is one very high mileage fake Ferrari.

Nope,
It's running very happily on 240v for the first time since new on it's two original transformers.
I was a little unsure at first if it was the way to go , but with Craig and Josephs help, it works perfectly.

Dashboard repaired, painted and ready for installation.

As is normal over the years, operators love to hack up something to keep them going.
No idea why they did this to the shifter, but it was an original DLX shifter at least.

Zd 370 Gear Shift.JPG

As the shifter plate had pretty much been destroyed over the years,
I started looking around for options of what to do with it.
I found that a well known restorer in California had made some reproductions
during some restorations he had done a while back.
Luckily for me had only one left.
Thanks Dan.

I always intended to deconvert the Cab from Turbo OutRun anyway,
so as work started I sent the PCB off to Mark Hayman at RetroClinic.
After many hours of work it started to live again. OutRun is in there somewhere.

Ze 425 PCBs.jpg

With the Cabinet cleaned and tidied up, it was ready to lift back onto the moving frame.

Before the Cab had even arrived in the UK,
I had spoken to John Bennett about one of his insanely well reproduced Motor Drive PCBs for it.
I had little confidence in the original still operating as it should.
John also did an amazing job of reproducing the little brake light control PCB.

New pyramid grey matting fitted.

Refitted the steering to the Cabinet, new LEDs to brighten up the dash.

Absolutely stunning restoration. In awe of this. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Suggest this goes into the Restoration Showcase thread perhaps?

Amazing job!
I like how you've managed to retain so much of the original parts and only a bit of repro parts added due to unavailability

Did you get a car body shop to do the painting of the plastics or did you do it yourself?

And yo have some engagement from the op and some historical photos are just pure gold. I love the history part too

I never got to say congrats! Last time I tried the forum was having a burpy moment and errored whenever I posted.

Obviously I've been following this one closely since the start, including the initial 'finding' photo which is pretty epic in itself! Well done fella, here's to many many miles setting the extended rom records for all the routes

I try to keep everything as many original parts as possible, but we all do really.
I only replaced what was either missing or destroyed.
And I am so sad, I even keep the old original broken parts to keep with the Cab.
smiley19.gif

Yep, I did all the paint, etc.
The original operator in Canada is a really nice guy and gave me loads of info and pictures.
They opened in March 1947, that is some serious Arcade History.
They still have a place nearby. but it's a ball pit / ticket redemption place like so many ended up.

The body panels, seat and headrest had took the usual beating over the years.
Not helped by a mix of aerosol spray paint and no masking tape.

Did the original motor drive PCB work? (I can’t rememember)

Well it sort of did, yes.
Very fast on start up test and incredibly erratic during a run.
It will wobble the cab around at times when it has no reason to at all
and generally moves the Cab in unpredictable ways.
Clearly has a problem, so glad I had yours to get it back to life.

The speakers had clearly played their last Magical Sound Shower many years ago.
It was impossible to find the correct specification that fitted nicely,
so I fitted the right spec ones to the original cage fronts.

A coin tower map on it for the first time since the original was torn off by a kid waiting for a go in 1988!

Zg 657 map.JPG

Still coins up from Canadian Quarters, but I found loads under the seat.

Zg 658 coin.JPG

It was lovely to find the original build date stickers like new on the inside of the coin tower.

Zg 659 Coin.JPG

As I am a bit of a sucker for a Cabs history, I approached the Operator that had owned it from new in Canada,
to see if they could give me a little of it’s history.

Zj 800 history.JPG

I got some great information back from the original owners.
They bought it on the 20th May 1987 and it had operated in one of four Arcades they had
at the time, Starcade, Sparkes, Electronic Avenue and Fun Villa. All in the Atlantic Canada area.

Zj 810 history.jpg

Zj 820 history.jpg

From 1996 it was put out on different locations they supplied Cabs to,
including Summer camps and water parks as a seasonal attraction.
Finally it was retired on the 19th September 2008 and put it storage,
until it was sold off as a part of a package deal to a well known Arcade dealer in the US in early 2020.
