Hi guys,

The resto bug has unfortunately got me again. Initially, I wasn't going to share this due to the fact that it's going to be an almost identical process to the Donkey Kong finished not long ago but decided that after all it is Popeye, not Donkey Kong and I wanted to share it here on UKVAC. It wont be finished until at least the spring as it's too cold in the garage to spray and also, while the 'spray booth' is set up next time I think Chuckie Egg is bringing his DK over for a coat of Blue also.

Anyhow, on Friday 29th August Popeye arrived, coming across the English Channel again from Germany. A nice solid cab for sure, carries the normal battle scars with some nice lock down bar holes in the front but it's not as rough as the DK.....which is obviously good news.

The cab was tested and working 100% on arrival. After a couple of games It was then stripped of it's internals.

The cab was then put in the Garage. The base was repaired, I left my camera at home but it's was pretty good, just one of the corners had come away.

Then it was all about cleaning the wiring harness, wheels, marquee etc, etc This was done mid September.

I had a go at the monitor yesterday. It was pretty dirty as expected but nice.

First job was to remove the chassis

Then the frame

Same old story, a bucket of soapy water a sponge and some clean rags!

Degauss coil and clips

Tube back in the frame

Got lucky again, no burn!

The next job will be to re cap the chassis, install a new Flyback Transformer, HOT etc

Going ok so far!

Cheers, Al

Looks like you had a pretty good machine to begin with, good luck with the rest.

I am so glad your sharing this with the community Al, as your restorations are always a pleasure to see .
Iam sure there are a few people like me who are not so technical and find this extremely helpful.
Its looking good mate

I've got quite a bit of burn on mine :(

Just cleaned the chassis and i'm ready to throw some caps around.

A dry paint brush and a hoover with some grunt was ample. Dettol wipes I find perfect for cleaning the wiring.

Cap kits for both chassis and audio amp, filter capacitor, H.O.T & Flyback on standby

it will matter more for a pcb than a monitor chassis. Saying that though you can buy anti static brushes. I bought one from eBay for cleaning pcbs.

It is difficult, in fact Popeye, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior are notoriously difficult games but they can all be mastered.

Hey guys,

I've had the pots for some time from when I restored DK and brought a fair old few. I'll take a look and see where they came from but I think they came from Farnell?

That monitor looks brand new! I've been reading a few things about the Nintendo monitors having water soluble aquadag on them. Yours looks really clean, I take it yours didn't have the water soluble stuff on it?
