Well… it’s been about 5 weeks since this thread came to our attention and thanks to unusually good sunny weather in April I got outside on the patio and sorted one neglected arcade piece which has waited over 15 years ( not that long here some have been taking root much longer)

So Veteran Car kiddie ride done !
Symptoms coin door had a suite (All machines use same key where practical) company lock removed to use elsewhere , but in 15 years exposed to the elements the coin door was solid shut with high security rust!

Gently opened it up to see everthing else was still present and proceeded to strip it down … wiring all detached and attacking the 4mm Allen head dome bolts rusted in place .. they got a spray of WD40 and left a week or so … then to my amazement I got them moving ok with a gentle hammering of the hex key and persistent back and to turning .. they came out good but new ones were found for the replacing of the body later.

Exposing the engine room below as the body lifted off it was half full of dust rust leaves and thick cobwebs but Henry hoover earned his place sucking most of the crap out to show a motor which moved quite freely as I turned the belt pulley by hand,,,, so it’s going to be an easy one ???

Anyhow it was just mainly a time consumer, the motor was run direct to a mains lead and the chassis rocked fine.. so gambled the timer would also run ok without any Electronic rot ? it did too but no sound as the speaker was rotten .. Replacement found and now we have sound … excellent!!!

So the heart and brain are healthy time for some cosmetic surgery ,, while the yellow and silver have aged ok the red had gone a sad brown “ugly shade of fade” so respray was in order.. see the pictures

All masked up a nice bright signal red paint job on the wheel arches and running board steps ….. sprayed and light yacht varnish later to add a bonus shine !

Meanwhile the mech was tested only to find it was partially failing as it only took 20p and old pound and I had found the ride pricing was 30p and 50p for two from flashing the bear wires of the timer during the chassis testing…. So found a replacement 126 validator still old pound but happily takes 10 20 & 50p coins and it’s not goin out again commercially just for the grandkids ….

The rusty door and it’s oxidised alloy frame were cleaned up and resprayed I satin black , and the oxidised steering wheel same and finished in hammerite green ( nice) new bolts were needed to remount the steering wheel as they just snapped when I came to undo them….

The horseshoe reject coin catcher also got a brief wire brush up and I used the green hammerite spray there too to cover the remains of surface rust save trying find a new chrome one !

Today Easter Sunday final credit wiring re-attached and refit the decorative folded hood moulding behind the seat, also sprayed in satin black … quite happy now to put one side until the grandkids come to give it extensive testing !!! ?? !!! Rocking musical car ride and as long as nana keeps them stocked up with coins .. all is good? Two new odd locks fitted to coin door and timer adjust door in base.

Done 😃😃😃

I also manage to move Trigger the carnival horse onto a warehouse trolley and get it up the garden - it’s well rotted base rooted to the ground for over 25 years it’s fell to bits a bit…. But now measured up for base rebuild and just need to dismantle it slowly so I can get fairly accurate motor and gearbox hole positions measured to make a new base … wow it’s delicate .. bonus as son in law and I lifted it the debris it left behind exposed it’s shipwreck seawater damaged internal treasure as about ten quid worth of 20p coins sat in a pile on the shredded plywood flakes from the front corner as the coin entry tower keeled over, the wooden coin box had virtually vanished. Maybe a bit more challenging than the car ? Even the paint job is a total strip back , sand , prime , undercoat , coach paint multi colour and varnish

Estimate - maybe 12 weeks if the motor is not ceased beyond repair? Total rebuild refurb required. Here’s some summary car pictures and a couple of the horse now mobile on a trolley to begin!

Nothing is certified as dead here until it’s been cremated !!!

While this thread is still getting interest here is a bit of early unexpected progress on Trigger.

After patiently dismantling the crumbling sides the heart was exposed only to find the motor currently appears to be totally seized solid but the wobble gearbox and timer look maybe ok? Timer and speaker removed for attention in workshop and all the plate bolts in the base seem to be moving to undo , just awkward as they are 1/4 whitworth bolts in and age of metric spanners! This was Monday 28th April so ahead of schedule but motor may delay things and it’s early days

So…. Nothing Tuesday but had an interesting day with a 5 hour visit from a ukvac member who I find only lives 8 miles away ….. he got a tour of my home workshop and garden and still only saw a fraction … To be fair I can be a bit boring maybe but with 50 years to talk about I think he was impressed ??????

Not least as he has asked on PM if he can come again next week , which I am happy to oblige… the kettle is always ready to go and like today when I got back on to Trigger the kiddie ride I welcome not getting on the tools all day!

More progress in pictures all the base plated bolts came out and the wobble box detached from rear support arm and front rocking bearings lifted clear .. and the coin entry tower released from the crumbling plywood side tho that had to be introduced to the 9” industrial grinder to de-bolt loose.

The footrest rubbers were all split with rust packed inside reducing the footrest diameter somewhat so …. It’s gonna be a cut away job and weld on a fresh footrest bar….. but horse is now all separated from the old flood rotted base and tied in a new perspective to the trolley for a power wash or maybe a sandblast? .This will make prime and repaint one of the next big tasks..

While that dries between coats the wood replacement ( not acquired yet) will be assembled , drilled and all the bits like casters and gearbox and motor sorted.. ..

I am allowing about 10-12 weeks for the whole refurb project so this thread will probably be on page 9 or lower by then so in the meantime here’s another couple of pictures to peruse ! Thank for the encouraging comments on the previous veteran car !!! Refurb .

And all the crumbly rotten wood is just ready for a bonfire in the 45 gallon oil drum we use to cremate redundant fruit machines every now and then . Happy with my progress in a few sunny hours so that spurs me on too !!! May1st we will see how it goes by end of June maybe ?

Great Photo Looks like the horse is going to clear the fence quite comfortably!
Hope the unseated rider is enjoying a cup of tea in the sun.

Yes well derserved cuppa and white Kit Kat break … quite funny I thought it looked like it was going over to the neighbours garden when wife and I lifted it back on the trolley after brushing down all the rust and wood flakes !!! Too hot to do anymore today !

DELAYED ADDED EDIT sun 4th May the good news is I put motor shaft in the vice and with loads of WD40 and gentle body rocking the motor eventually began to slacken off on Friday , improved Saturday and it’s quite free just a light armature rub so Today Sunday popped a plug on it and it goes with a slight rub noise and stops near that position so will strip it and clean it up better …
HOWEVER The bad news the timer lid - I managed to undo with lot of effort reslotting two of the corner screws but inside it was about 3/4 inch of rusty water. The sound and timer unit is probably unsalvageable . Component deep in sludgy brown stagnant water. I poured some boiling water in it and with a small artist brush cleaned off the brown sludge from many accessible areas but I fear the legs of capacitors and rust from the transformer laminates had settled round some IC legs, also probably beneath all the chips , shorting tracks , so not holding my breath on that surviving. The sound chip might be ok if I can find another unit in the vintage junk ?

I ordered the wood yesterday. A new footrest iron rod and new M8 bolts so still hoping for a partial restoration till I can find a system 2002 timer ! Fingers now crossed !

The restorations in my workshop have slowed down as was in need of a deep sort ,purge, sell and giveaway.
Have all the components finished and ready to go back into continental midi , working on a screen print for long term Xenon project. Need to get a Wells Gardner Medium resolution monitor over to Gunblade to test with the chassis he has been working on for Narc.
Making a replacement base for a friends small Bas cabinet...

if you have issues with the Motor and haven't got one I may have a suitable replacement, it works though I think it has some sort of clutch on it, it starts slow but if you spin it sounds like something engages and it spins faster

Thanks for the offer @Bods , I do have one lined up here, not certain it’s suitable, but I am also in Stoke next week where a friend of mine reconditions lots of motor driven industrial equipment , so I will pop this one in car . Only issue he would need one to be ready , as he broke his arm in 4 places , tripping over while carrying a concrete fence base kick-board a couple of weeks ago. His arm was trapped to ground under the prefab panel and his body too .. ouch !

But I can leave this one with him to tempt him get better quicker maybe ? He collects vintage arm pull bandits and has a rockola juke box so we swap skills all the time for last 30 years ….

I will be taking grapes and a meal voucher for the carvery too 😜

This week I got the plywood for base bottom & top and two sides all strategically cut from one 8’x4’ sheet ..along with 4 x 2.4m 3”by2” to frame the base, …..it’s now Saturday 10th May so it’s going quite quickly ?so far !

18mm outdoor ply, so got the timber yard to cut those to size nice and straight , also to fit in the car! and all are primed now and the base has new castors fitted. The forward mounting plate is also cleaned , painted and refitted with all new bolts. It’s not just a case of sticking them together as many considerations are required for coin entry tower , motor positioning etc, and because it’s £56 a sheet i can’t make any measuring cutting errors. Also to save buying a second sheet, I will be upcycling a couple of old 1980s zaccaria rear doors just for the two end panels. (I must have kept /“hoarded” these for over 30 years just in case I ever needed to sacrifice them to another purpose?) .

The horse is patched up with car filler on a couple of battle scars , primed and new footrest rod welded in place as the old one was weak and seriously corroded. The wife and I are both getting stuck in with this urged on by the current good weather and she loves painting .

Other tasks are being completed along side, drilling necessary holes and checking out the parts that make it operate . Here are a couple of pictures showing restoration progress already but it’s still looking a long job … but to see the pile of shredded base, many people wouldn’t have given it any hope of survival … I believe !

The ghostly white horse can be wheeled around to get near power hose , welder, etc. and we have an extensive array of tools which enable cabinet repairs but the aged ‘slingsby’ warehouse trolley is a real asset both moving and repositioning for the footrest removal and replacement and a 9” metal cutting disc / grinder made short work of the old rotten footrest bar.

By next weekend we should have horse back on the base with the whole box platform assembled ready to paint but the electronic controller box may be a long time to repair .. I need a new z80 and it’s dil socket for starters as it’s all rusty as are a few ICs but they all plug in so assuming I can unseat them without any legs falling off the pcb may clean up ??? Big wishful thinking there !!!!! May have to resort to a new timer unit ? However quite hopeful on the motor which runs now , just needs stripping to clean it up fully and paint it.

It’s great to hear others have some long term projects that go un finished but do get periodic attention ( often as bods says parts can be illusive or costly when they are available)
This is the summary of my life , having sidelined several breakdowns for non urgent repair? Or restoration?

I have so much to do it’s difficult to decide priorities , I keep looking at Trigger a carnival horse kiddie ride which I first encountered in1978 when my future associate had it in the arcade doorway of Lyon’s holiday camp in Rhyl .

. . .

I can’t get near any floor space to photograph it as it’s rarer than parts for these older items .. parts often need making for some mid century antiques!

The show must go on … that mess below will make many of you lost mojo folks feel quite cheerful - no doubt?

You want to get that horse to the Repair Shop. It has a good back story and a need to be restored and loved again.

You can probably ignore my previous comment about the Repair Shop, you're doing a fantastic job there. The sunshine does help a lot.

Remember you have to keep it authentic and make sure you use only leaded paint :)

Remember you have to keep it authentic and make sure you use only leaded paint :)

Leaded coloured paint is no longer available in the UK , banned since mid 90s though some small tins of road marking red , yellow and white can be found for sign-writing but many outdoor paints are both shiny and hard wearing enough…

Also it’s not presently foreseen that Trigger will return to his former seaside duties ?

I saw one restored on repair shop a couple of years ago but I think they probably get inundated with requests to restore so many antique amusement and historical items that to be chosen might be a long shot lottery?

Thanks for the message of support , it encourages us to be as authentic as we can. our grandchildren think we are heroes!

Todays task just met a small snag….. my F clamps , used years ago when building 23” jamma cabs don’t quite open to the 25.5” required across the ride base while I calculate the precise end panels …. Oh dear , but our pinball sash clamp fits just had to lift the job a bit more to get it under… the two halves of the top are almost ready to try in place too

Also the coin box door made from an off cut looks to fit snug ….

Well the base is coming together ok coin box and positioning guides the top is fastened permanently to the tower tube and prevents bounce out of coins when they fall down the tube …. That’s the good!

The ‘bad and the ugly’ come in one mess , as meanwhile in the workshop the motor is now in pieces and if you are of a nervous disposition or don’t do horror films look away now ……….

It’s rusty dust sludge laden windings and rusty armature can be examined now and it’s a toughie for sure .. but it ran when powered so here’s hoping ???

2 more pictures to go on with .. enjoy !

I'll be mostly focused on trying to get some flooring down and the cabs out the hallway whilst learning to co-exist with funk jnr

Pretty much decided on using membrane with an insulated floating floor and chipboard over the top, will just cover that with carpet tiles or something similar then. Need to get my bum into gear though, nursery isn't even done yet

August, woefully unprepared for it all.

Just starting on clearing stuff out of the nursery now... going to be a long road!

On the upside wife is still determined to go to play expo at the moment so that's probably likely to be my next jolly, do worry about her being overly optimistic but we'll see!
