PC only. I am a Mac user too so purchased a cheapy mini Dell PC from this forum for £50 and that does the trick.

Do you find it a useful bit of kit?

My 80s Thandar Logic analyser recently let out the magic smoke and I was thinking of replacing it with the 16 channel MSO analyser module for my Rigol DS1074Z Oscilloscope (which is around £200) but I suspect this might be more useful.

Hands down the best piece of arcade repair kit I've ever had or seen. Also, Aaron's support and communication has been awesome.
It's still as fantastic as ever! You have to apply your knowledge, skill and experience to what it tells you, but the information it gives you is priceless.Nes4life2020-12-29 17:10:43

My post from a few days ago about buying one - I did try dropping Aaron a message.
How does one go about actually ordering a Slicer?

When using Slice on say a 14 pin IC do you have to use the 20 pin clip or will a 14 Pin one work?

SoME of the boardS I work on can be a bit tight for space and the extra width could be an issue!

Dave, I've managed to get the client running on Mac OSX via a Virtualbox image running Windows 7 x64. I've only tested connecting to the Slice using USB, not actually found time to run a test using it yet. I'll try and do that in the next day or so and report back.

That would be awesome. Thanks

You can use 14 or 16 pin clip no problem, I'd recommend a Warwick knife edge type like this:

Thanks, I have a wide variety of clips from my now dead logic analyser, I think they are the same type.

Did you manage to get a chance to test this?

I did some looking around and you can now get a free (for personal use) VMWare Fusion Licence. It's been a while since I ran any sort of Windows VM but one thing I like about Fusion is 'Unity' mode where windows programs can appear as a window inside MacOS rather than a a windowed screen of a windows desktop (Or does virtualbox do that now as well)?

Hi Dave,

Yes I did get some basic testing done. I am able to get results back but they aren't exactly what I'm expecting (I'm testing using a working board). It's most likely that I'm doing something wrong/stupid rather then the tool or it's something to do with the PCB I'm using (a Tetris bootleg). I'm working with Aaron and the Whatapp team to try and do more testing. I also plan to dig out an old Windows Laptop to do some comparisons, will update once I've made some more progress.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dave,

OK after correcting my silly setup mistake I've retested using both a Windoze machine and my Mac with a Windows VM and both are working perfectly. I'm using Virtualbox with the USB 2.0 driver to connect to the Digilent box. Slice connects to it easily and can communicate without any apparent issues. Virtualbox does also support a 'seamless' mode so the Application Windows from Windows can appear on the Mac stand alone (or looking anyway).

Cheers,

Dan

Fantastic, As soon as I have some pennys spare I'll be buying one!

Several Questions..

1) Will it support anything bigger than 24 Pins?

2) Will it support something like 4116 RAM that has multiple voltages?

3) How does it test something like a PROM and ROM? Do you need the images for those devices and it compares to that image?

4) Does it keep track of how much of a chip has been tested? i.e. if I'm watching a RAM chip, does it know if the whole RAM chip has been exercised or just say a few bytes of it?
