Since he will just activate the device so you can use the device, maybe just buy all the unit first and then it will just be a case of activating it for you? You just be paying for the software which is constantly being updated and the support is pretty much instant. No indian representative constantly apologising and reading from set script here.

Think you just get sent the leads and clips but the agilent unit you buy yourself?

As a bonus you get access to the elite slice whatsapp group where nobody has read the manual and Aaron spamming updates daily. ??

Havnt had time to use mine lately but i be free to do some more repairs soon after i clear up the massive backlog ??

Yeah, I was on the list to get it in July/August - but I asked to delay a couple of months.

I do need to put an order on at Farnell, so good suggestion - I'll order the Agilent at the same time.

Elite Slice WhatsApp group - sounds interesting! Apart from 2 banana boxes full of boards to check, and a lockup full of boards I'll have to rescue from an ex operator in the near future - my Asteroids and my Breakout both have issues...and with kids holidays coming up, would be fun to try out the Slice and see what it finds on both of them!

This project intrigues me (test in circuit), sent a PM on 12 Dec (waiting for reply) about purchasing software/clip, etc. I already own a Digilent Digital Discovery logic analyzer.

anyone here have a cable to measure 24 or 28 pin ics ?

I am
about to make one myself, I asked gadgetfreak about a gerber file for
this iback in november ... no response, is sad because Slice is such a
good tool, I have done many repairs with its help since then.

If I
had a gerber file I would make a batch of the small pcbs and offer most here at same as my cost (no profit making intended, just same price as I pay for the small pcbs), just want to be able
to measure 24 and 28 pins ics.

Anyone?

I already have some interest for the larger pcbs (I mean 24 or 28 pins ones), so I am really in the need of the gerber files.
I hope gadgetfreak is fine, I asked him about the gerber files back in november, I hope that everythign is fine with him.
I think there are many who will need the 24 or 28 pins pcbs ... I think this would add to the Slice community since Slice is a fantastic tool and a very welcome addition to my repair environement, I think others see it the same.

First off I did respond to PM's from you in November, I seem to remember you were sending a lot of them.
Secondly you were part of a Slice update mail drop I sent out on the 30th December.
I don't make a living out of selling Slice but I do charge some money as this keeps me tinkering with the code and adding new features / devices.
I have spent more than 4000 hours developing Slice so far and am sure there will be many more.
I charge a fee for the extra cable to cover parts costs and a little towards the software and the extra devices this allows you to read/test.

The parts I use are high quality and matched between the standard 24 pin and extra 8 pin cable, which is crucial to stop any skewing of the data as it is being collected at 200Mhz. If quality and consistency were not important I would have had job lots of cables made in China!

I have a few standard cables left but need to buy another reel of twisted ribbon before I can make any extension cables. I have plenty of PCB's.

I will not be releasing the Gerbers or the source code to anyone unless at some point in the future I stop developing the software.

Perhaps I should have charged £4000 a licence, then I could have made a living at it! Instead I have a life which has involved a few trials and tribulations over xmas and the New Year. I will be getting back to sorting out the interest list soon.

Wow, your comment left me sad and speechless for a while.

My only intent was to contribute here and by that help you out.

And -last off- I only sent you 2 mails (oct 25 and nov 3) about the cable and the nov 3 was about an issue with slice and the gerber files and
you left the gerber files part unanswered what made me in the end think about contributing and helping you .... well, thank you!

Aaron has put his heart and soul into this project. To date he has not made a single penny out of this yet has indirectly contributed to fixing thousands of games as a result of this tool. He's still putting in so much hard work into this tool that he doesn't even have time to sell it. The weekly updates to filmware for additional devices and functionality is second to none. I doubt you be able to find a device that is not supported on the SLICE!

Just today he's announce a function whereby you can grab data from a device and view it and use mame debugging to fix faults. Very clever indeed!

I'm not sure I understand why you are sad he doesn't want to give his hard work away for free? Maybe some antidepressants might help. Prozac anyone?

I don't own a Slice, but everyone who I've spoken to who do own one are very happy with it.

Personally, I'd offer to buy one of those adapters from the originator of Slice rather than asking for the gerbers for free. Who knows where those gerbers will end up if they are given away to anyone who asks for them.

That's just my thoughts.

Indeed.

A slice has helped fix a few of your PCBs.

I for one am very grateful for gadgetfreak for all the time he has spent making one of the best tools in my arsenal for fixing PCBs.

I understand it can be frustrating waiting for one but as someone who fixes PCBs for others I know how real life and just motivation can get in the way of this sort of thing-you have to understand that if it stops being enjoyable you can stop wanting to do it so you have to pace yourself so you don't get burned out doing what you used to enjoy.
