Small update,

The current PCB has now been tested in an Upright OutRun cab, rather than my Turbo midi. The Shaker motor control in MAME and Cannon Ball is now verified. Video's below showing Cannon Ball & Power Drift gameplay.

Cannon Ball demo https://youtu.be/CCTCXDynMQg

Power Drift demo https://youtu.be/JBE7Loy_IRs

I have a small batch of boards shipping to early adapters this coming week, assuming there are no major hiccups when used in their cabs, I will be looking to push the go button on the final rev1 working PCB's design which will be for sale soon.

Nearly there! - I think I've said that before, but we are getting closer to production now.

Cheers, Mart.

It’s probably worth mentioning that on my cab there’s a bit of a fault currently when changing gear it can cause the screen to jump / jolt - you can see it a couple of times in the videos above, this is not a fault with smarty’s pcb it’s my cab.

Also that is some wonderful driving ;) haha

Powerdrift runs brilliantly too

Could you use these with a Joystick too.

This is not something I'm looking to offer, the board does have breakout connections for the analog and digital controller/button connections, so you can 'roll your own' if not putting it in a specific cabinet. But you will need to use the analog controls.

This is really cool!

I use to 're-anime' cabs with faulty or none pcb since many years. I started in 2004 with pc under dos, next windows, and quite recently with raspberry. It was an era when a very little hardware solution were available (keyboard hack, the bird of ipac), it was often necessary to be very inventive and do a lot of experiments. It was 'handicraft' and not as clean as your solution, which looks really great & professional, congratulations.

A friend of mine has a faulty/sleeping Turbo Out Run since more than 15 years... we'll go with your solution for sure, and if he can also play original Out Run on it, it'll be a great bonus

I'm definitely interested! I'd been wanting to find a Power Drift PCB and make an adaptor for my Out Run DLX, but this is an even better solution particularly as the motion support becomes available

It's not the most convenient cabinet to move and swap PCBs around in
smiley36.gif

That was something I wanted to do also, though I was thinking about using the little Turbo Outrun cab to pop Power Drift in to play, got untested board but this would be great way if that don't work

One question about audio, Outrun Deluxe and Turbo Outrun Cockpit/Deluxe moving have Subwoofers, so it's 3 audio outputs, would it be possible to have the Subs working as it really adds to the sitdown experience, or maybe at later stage if you do motion versions maybe

I'd certainly be interested in a few

Outrun/Turbo outrun as back up for Turbo Outrun cab

Power Drift to play in Turbo Outrun

Thunderblade/AfterBurner as back up

Hang-on and Super Hang-on so I can play in LE Hang-on

What about Limited Edition Hang-on too, could that be included in with the other 2, give people 3rd option, not much different to Super Hang-on but another one at least

As others mention, not rushing you as we all know what it's like with work and everything else but Taito Driving series that will drop straight in Chase HQ, SCI or Continental Circus cab so can play

Chase HQ Series, Conti Circus, Top Speed, would be cool

I've now added a 3rd audio output which is a simple mix of Left and Right on the 6pin Molex, the OutRun DLX wiring diagram shows both the 4pin and 6pin being used with the L & R channels of the 6 pin going to Connectors (Phono?) but there's no indication of what they're connected to.

If anyone with a DLX can confirm that would be great.

You're the 1st to mention the LE version. Have a house point :) Am I right that this is an altered version that was easier on the cornering based on being on the sit down bike? I'll look to add this for some extra fun.

Yes, this will be the next project one the Sega versions are out the door.

Thanks for the input

Awesome

Yeah it's much better with Sub working, Space Harrier has 2 decent size speakers so not really needed and amp is proper STK Hi-Fi type

Would have to check on the Connections, but they do have Monitor and Audio connections if I remember right so you can connect external screen for others to watch and Audio as well

just had a look and yeah stereo Phono line out and Monitor RGB & Sync connections on front of base so guess 6 pin to 3 Channel Amp and 4 Pin to Line out

Thunderblade Deluxe has 3.5mm headphone connectors for audio also, So most other probably same

Er No, Thank You sir

and the guys that made Raspberry Pi

Happy to help anytime with suggestions etc

Limited Hang-On, yes that's what they say. Probably because It's a quicker game than original Hang-On and the Mini Ride On is easier to lean the bike being half type, It's quite difficult leaning full size so people say they made it easier on corners

Hardware same, just slightly modded game and title screen, one day hopefully I play them enough I might get to see what difference is

Top work

Is the centre speaker definitely a bass subwoofer?
If so, where’s the lowpass circuit - on the game board or on the speaker? (It isn’t on the amp)

It’s hard to make out the schematics, but the centre is a mix of left/right, however the output stage opamp might have different RC values around it to remove the treble. Worth checking on a real board maybe.

I don't think the speaker in the seat facing backwards is just a subwoofer.
It has the same range coming out of it as the headrest ones.
It sounds like it just plays both channels mixed to me.

SmartyPi update 26-08-21

Apologies, Its been a while since my last progress update, here's a rundown of where we are,

The PCB is now revised and has built in connections for Out Run style cabinets, the majority of components as now surface mount which enables easier external assembly I'm expecting 80% of the interest will be with wanabee Ferrari drivers!
1f642.png
The Connector layout now matches the original Out Run PCB, making connecting SmartyPi easier with less adjustment to cabling positions within your cab.

I have altered the MAME rom sets that will work with SmartyPi. I have been given permission from Chris to support the latest Version on Out Run enhanced. Combined with Cannon Ball, Turbo Out Run and Power Drift this is a real nice package to compliment you original Cab and PCB even if it still works.

After Burner cab owners will be pleased to know Chris's Enhanced Edition of AB is supported and will be the default rom for After Burner users. Full info of the additions over at Chris's site. As a token of thanks, each sale of a SmartyPi board will include a donation to a Charity that is significant to Chris; 'The Brain Tumor Charity' Read more about this on Chris's Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/outrunappeal

Hang-On & Super Hang-On owners can also Play Hang-On LE which was a Super Hang-On redesign for use with the ride-on bike, the courses are simpler to play with less difficult corners taking into account the leaning of the sit on bike. Sega's 1989 game Racing Hero has also been added to the supported game list. This is an X-Board game and plays well with all the required controls of the Hang-on/Super cabs.

Out Runners has been tested, it does play, but due to the controller differences in the Gear selection and lack of controls for the radio station selection I have decided not to include it for the time being. Rad Mobile and Rad Rally have also been play tested, and while the controls match Out Run style cabinets, the emulation isn't perfect, with sound being the most notable issue. Again these will not be supported at the present time.

Thanks to the help of various people testing pre release boards, I have now included a calibration system which automatically maps the range of analog controls (Steering, Accelerator etc) to the cabinet that it being used in. For example Out Run and Hang-On have a completely different physical turning range, this is now reflected in the control range that the software see's. This may become customizable in the future if you want to fine tune and tweak controls for now each cabinet has has its values recorded in calibration mode and these values will be used as a default setting.

The ability to control the output signal (Start Lamp, Motors etc) is now configurable in the configuration file on the microSD card. - You can selection to have All outputs, Start Lamp only or No outputs active. There are various use cases where this might be helpful, I'll discuss further nearer the time of release.

DLX owners.... At the time of writing I have not been able to dedicate the time to test my design, this will be completed post launch of SmartyPi which with support Upright & Midi cabinets initially.

If you've been following along in any tech news circles recently you will likely have seen reports of component shortages and price increases, Raspberry Pi 4 is currently in very short supply with limitations of very low quantity orders in most cases. What does this mean...We at this point not a lot, reworking of my parts list is in progress, even Chinese clone parts that are in ready supply have increased in price it's now common that something that was costing £3 six months ago is now £6-£8, with Brexit now in place in the UK we also get 20% tax added at point of sale from most countries including China, these are not show stopper issues, but will probably mean boards will be sold in batches of 10-15 per month once my production line is up and running the board is released. Due to this self imposed limitation, it will be one PCB per person at the current time so keep things fair so all those wanting a SmartyPi will have equal chance to get hold of one.

When can you get one? Soon, is all I will say at the moment, I have a small batch of what I'm saying is the final design being built. If they work as expected I will buy a larger PCB batch and then get an interest list started which I'll work through as the boards are built.

Day one release will be for Out Run Style cabs; Upright & Midi along with the Turbo Out Run Midi. Hang-On and Super Hang-On cabs will be supported with use of the additional adapter. An adapter for Power Drift Uprights is also made, it just needs to be verified in a real cab - Technically it's identical to Out Run Uprights, assuming my pin remapping works these will be also be available on day one.

The Enduro Racer is being tested in a cabinet this weekend, Space Harrier will also be getting rechecked in the coming weeks.

After Burner needs more testing for compatibility due to the use of multiple output drive signals for lamps and shaker motor, we're verified as working OK, I just didn't get enough time with the cab to be 100% happy with all functions.

You'll hear about any updates in this UKvAc thread first..

Thanks again for the interest shown in these threads and via pm's.
