I've wondered for years if Sega Japan / America actually kept one of every machine in storage for archival purposes. Turns out, they do! The 3DS handheld has seen some really nice ports of all the key Sega Dlx cabs from the 80's and in order to guarantee the accuracy of the conversions, the programmers went and pulled the original cabs out of storage.

This in itself would be cool enough but whilst browsing the album (some great pics of the Thunderblade here by the way)......:

.......I found this pic of their Space Harrier Deluxe, and it's pretty different to the production model we got in the field:

  • Different stripe art on the seat sides, plus a small square jet nozzle decal (the production model has this area as either a continuation of the yellow & red stripe or just plain white)
  • The screen bezel mold is completely different than the production one
  • There is no instruction plate (or holes for it) on the screen bezel
  • The main side art is stuck on, instead of screen printed (I wonder if the prototype 'jet engine' artwork is underneath it!?)
  • The foot well rubber matting is the standard grey Sega pyramid type, instead of the production ping pong bat type rubber
  • The joystick is powdercoated black instead of gunmetal grey
  • The red and silver decals that go on the bezel directly under the marquee are missing

If its true that Sega keeps one of every cab in storage then that must mean they have a working R360 in storage somewhere, right!

I also saw a super hang on in those photos that I have never seen anywhere else, maybe a standard non-moving super hang on?

It's a Hang On mini cab conversion to Super Hang On with a factory kit; this is the only photo I've seen of one too! Rare as

I'm currently in NY, and visited Barcade on 24th street yesterday, and discovered a game I would love to have in the shed.
Is Slither, a game inspired of Centipede by the looks and gameplay of it.

Edit.
Seems linke picture didn't work, updated with a stock image, and replace it when I'm back in Denmark.Muerto2016-03-22 14:26:05

I don't know what's worse - the fact that you guys didn't even notice that the cab's not switched on, or the fact that I *did* notice.

I really am ashamed, Eric.

EDIT: On a positive note, the image has been 'bumped' along the thread.

Similar to Jodo's post, found a couple larger versions of pics (from http://ittells.jp/community/topic.htm?topicId=2236&communityId=1291) that have been floating around in magazines and such.

Note the instructions, warning stickers, Sega logo size on the rear panel and title screen on this Space Harrier:

Note the timer and speed area of the screen on this OutRun (looks to have DM pricing plates):

That space harrier is also missing the ashtray on the coin tower.

I love this stuff

*THE* most incredible thing about this Harrier though? It has a STEP built into the base at the front!!!! I have only ever seen this in the poor quality black and white image that's included in the manual but this is truly evidence that it made it into the initial run in some fashion and was later removed. Maybe people were tripping up over it or it simply wasn't needed? Who would have thought I could get so excited over a step!

Also - to keep the cool factor going, if you can source the licensed Sega model of Harrier Dlx that came out a few years back, that model is based on the prototype and has ALL of the above pointed out differences incorporated into it

Oh, the side art is different - the underbelly of the dragon and his hair are orange on this version and yellow on the final art.
