update! it appears to be a heat problem, or a dodgy pcb connection. had it running for 3 hours with no issues, after gently flexing the pcb and leaving the back door open.

I'll continue to test it tomorrow and post back

I'll put £5 of Chappy's cash on the fact that its over heating

Only difference this time is that it's sat out from the wall.. I think I'll rig a fan up for the pcb cage anyway, but it's looking good

I may forget loads of things but some I do remember

Infact all I could remember was that the boards get hot and need air to them

Deff get a fan in there

Mine is back under the knife so to speak. I've also got a working Spy
