Having read the above and a trip to my brothers who streams everything and hasn't seen a Bluray I took a few movies, 4k Streaming of Top Gun Maverick didn't look any difference to Bluray with picture detail and even my brother pointed out bluray picture looked brighter and better colours, also for some reason despite amp coming up DD 5.1 the surround sound was pretty much non existent streaming where bluray was excellent, after though he tried some other movies like Predator and surround on that was fine streaming though the picture was so grainy but didn't have time to compare Bluray
Another hobby you could say is old Hi-fi stuff
Main reason I went over was to see how good modern Hi-Fi was compared to vintage, the argument has continued for a while now

and he's testing out some new stuff before he sends it back I wanted to hear as he said his with a subwoofer will beat my setup for bass
His Polk speakers £1000 which he's had a while
Sony Amp £800
SVS SB-3000 Sub £1100
His old Mission 734 for surround
Well it was good on Top Gun Maverick with the subwoofer and obviously you need a Sub on Home Cinema Setup but for Music I wasn't convinced its going to be better than old speakers with 12 or 15" bass units so was it?
Well it's very hit n miss on different songs
So his Polk speakers are rated at 36hz which is why he bought them as he wants low frequency bass but doesn't want anything old. just because they claim such on paper it doesn't mean it's going to hold true, I've seen people on internet stating 36hz at +/-3db yet Polk don't even give a db rating, mine are rated at 38hz +/-3db
Now the Technics speakers I have are rated at 27hz so you'd think they'd be better but -16db also 35hz at -10db so there not close to my Celestions with 12" speakers, if you take the previous model celestions they say 18hz-40khz but no db rating and mine have bigger cabinets yet the amount of people claiming the earlier ones are better is amazing, not sure why Celestion would make newer version worse a guy thats had both says there not as good
My system Technics 1984 Pre/Power Amp 150w din x2 and Superbass which is why I bought it with and the Celestion speakers from 1979
So it's now got to compete with new Sony amp, though that's only rated at 85w 8ohm and Polk speakers with added subwoofer 800w RMS and 18hz so really this should beat my setup now.
I do question the claimed power output of these new amps also, I mean my brother says hes never had any speakers that could handle the power like his current ones, I've got a pioneer SC-LX85 thats 140w a channel 8ohm and my Technics speakers rated 90w with 12" bass on my cinema setup can take that amp on near full, the better speakers can't handle the power of the old technics amp with superbass playing bass heavy tracks
He put Dua Lipa - New Rules on and cranked it up and yeah on that it was loud and bass shaking you on the sofa, should hope so with that power from subwoofer
Knowing what some other tracks sound like on mine I got him to put on
Kiesza - Hideaway
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
and the insane bass track
Akon - I Wanna love You
and this is where it got interesting because these weren't good on his setup at all compared to mine, I was expecting it to be at least as good or really should be better with 18hz of sub but it wasn't, it lacked the quality low bass mine produces that totally fills the room, was really odd how poor it sounded and he has his speakers near one wall and sitting near other wall with window and mine speakers near front window and sit just passed half way in lounge, when I had smaller ones of my speakers in bedroom with them near wall and sitting near window other side you get even more full effect of bass
Would be interesting to hear mine in his Lounge, no way I'd swap to modern equipment for listening to music though, prefer the quality of sound on mine in every way and only using modern amp for movie setup because I have too
