Each to their and not strictly on topic, but when I turn on my asteroids cabaret, the room is filled with the most wonderful aroma of old, heated components and almost the electricity itself is tangible. I love it. You cannot replicate or imitate this.

Look on the bright side, if it was a Pole Position that would include a room full of smoke!

I had the same issue with my DK (smelt of rats pi$$ in the marquee area).

One thing that helped considerably was soaking the affected area in a strong solution Zoflora disinfectant, keep re-applying it and eventually the smell reduces and is replaced by the fragrance of Zoflora you have chosen.

The smell never really fully went until the cab was resprayed.

Still refer to the cab as Donkey Pong!!!

after the sea came in in Towyn 1990 several of the machines which were lifted out of the 30" deep seawater saturated with drain sewage and mud WE THOUGHT WOULD SURVIVE ? and they did for a while 1 , 2 or even 3-4 years ……………

while the majority were unsalvageable those which got a quick 24 hr 'dip and dry' did dry out and saw the year out ………………. but when we closed the following winter and the air became still inside the arcade and people natural aftershave and perfume were no longer passing through …………...

IT WAS THEN ,,,, THE SMELL OF DETERIORATING CHIP BOARD .. DAMP ROTTING FORMALDAHIDE GLUED SAWDUST COMPACTED TIMBER EXPLODING UNDER ITS OWN ENERGY ……. smelled like the machines a few generic videos and 80s fruits were FARTING CONTINUOUSLY … can't be described till you smell it

more than 50% % of machines were skipped within a month or two as they were unsalvageable but of the 'survivors' about a third of those went the following winter …………. I got two new legs for our Brunswick air hockey and a few things still exist today

I have on my garden a 'TRIGGER' carnival horse kiddie ride which the plywood base finally gave out about 15 years ago and began to split and collapse ……it had been lifted from the water on to the pool table and when it dried out we stripped the wiring and motor and cleaned it fully as we thought so it lived for ages after.....…… I intend to refurbish it … I DONT THINK IT STILL SMELLS BUT …………………. it grows some of the strangest looking fungus toadstools you ever saw and they stink another odour all of their own ………….. probably poisonous too???????????

Hah this thread is great.

Well for me it's also a cigarette flavoured Astro City, I've deep cleaned it and owned it for years now but it still has a weird musty smell, if Im honest I kind of like it now

, I associate it with good times.

I should imagine all Japanese cabs that were onsite have this issue, don't they still smoke like troopers over there in public places?

Thanks for the stories people. Of course nice smelling cabs are valid too.

The first time i went to AC amongst those EC Goliaths I went along and smelled the marquees. Instant nostalgia. What a weirdo

2 of my purchases come to mind.
One was a Moon Base tabletop in lovely condition, which came out of an abattoir. The stench when you powered it up was totally unbearable. I put a jar of Neutradol in there and after a month the smell disappeared. I sold it on since then.

The other one came out of a pub which I spent my younger days in, we used to play on it. A Nintendo PC-10, with the plastic shell. Absolutely stunk of cigs and stale beer. There were dribble marks of beer inside the cab all over. It took a hell of a lot of cleaner and paper towels to make it anywhere close to acceptable!

Once bought a Cosmic Alien in a really beautiful condition but when I opened the backdoor for the first time I saw that the whole base of the cab was filled with rat or mice excrements (I'm not an expert here). You couldn't see the transformer on the ground anymore, like THAT filled. Never seen or smelled anything like this.

The other smelly cab is my Galaga 88. It's nice and clean and working but every two years or so when I open it to adjust something there is this smell... it's like you're suddenly living in a swamp or something, like a really dark place near a river filled with old, moisty, rotten wood where even the rats don't go because it's just too much.

I very briefly had my head within 1m of the open rear door of Pat's Enduro Racer DLX that we saved on a rural raid last year. The mould was thicker than a 1980's carpet.

Pretty sure opening that cab kicked off this whole covid thing, the pangolins in Asia are totally innocent!

I cleaned that out wearing a hazmat suit like Dustin Hoffman in Outbreak.

Luckily it was during a hot spell as god knows how else I would have dried that cab out after it had two litres of mold remover thrown inside it, the smell of the chemicals reacting wit the Covid spores was evil.

Think I got Dave to help load it by picking up the moldy end as well as I didn't fancy getting near it, that cough finally gone mate?
