Arcade repair

Looking for some help/suggestions as I’m new to having an arcade machine and have limited knowledge to how expensive things are to repair or if even they’re repairable so any replies advice is appreciated
.

Please This is in no way a dig at any company. I am just seeking other opinions of those who have far more knowledgeable about the subject

I recently sent my my BAS cab that’s been converted MVS cab to company that offer repairs.

It recently stopped working so having been unable to get it get repaired locally I sent it away. I bought as project to make it look like a big red Neo eventually.

They have diagnosed it as having a failed monitor etc

They advised me to not invest in my big ugly cab fixing it and they can re-design one of their existing cabs(why not mine?) to look like Neo geo/lordsvale lookalike for £1000/1200 which I thought was crazy.

To get mine working again I’m looking at a repair bill of £400/600 if they replace the monitor for a similar 26” CRT and do a few other bits then I have to get it shipped back to me for another £100.

Should I scrap it completely, fork out the bill and have it work then continue my restoration job or even look fort it be repaired elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for any replies/helpMoremonj2020-08-08 19:07:43

Hi James , Its a hard one I suppose and depends what you want to spend.

I would look at it this way :-

1) How much did it cost in the first place & how much would a working one cost ?

2) What is the full breakdown of the repairs to yours ??

3) Worth just getting it retuned for £100 ???

I would ignore the purchasing a converted version they have myself , As you say why not convert yours ?

Biggest issue with buying and converting things is the cost , If you cant repair things yourself then its always worth buying a working one to be honest.

Dave.

Hi Dave, appreciate the reply

So at the moment the CAB has run me £400, £200 of that is courier fees and it was working fine and until a power surge and these appears to have blown the monitor.

When I sent it away I gave myself a £300 budget for it to be repaired and have the control panel cleaned up as it’s a little bit of a mess at present.

I am now looking at £600 repair bill for the new monitor and the Control panel to be replaced/cleaned up.

It’s a big old unit and I thought it would look good as big red eventually.

I’ve recently purchased a lordsvale so that’s going to be my working one for the time being but I can’t seem to let my big bas go without a fight hahaMoremonj2020-08-08 14:41:04

If it was me I would get it shipped back and get a second opinion on monitor & other repairs. Seems steep @ £600 for a monitor repair & control panel tidy up. The monitor could be sent of without cabinet , A few members on here repair them.

As Gee said I would be a little bit suspicious just based on the prices he wants to charge.

If you dont ow them anything get it sent back.

Dave.

I would ask this company exactly what needs fixing and take it from there.

Gunblade and tb2000 fix monitors so could be worth dropping them a message to perhaps get a ball park figure on repair costs for the CRT. For other items you could post in the technical or wanted sections with regards to what can be repaired for parts needed etc.,

Ask for a breakdown of costs, I'd love to know why it costs £600 to repair a monitor and tidy up a control panel.

Like others have said, get it out of there asap and this forum will guide you through sorting the cab out at a reasonable cost.

Thanks for replies

I am asking the questions, especially having been quoted £1000/12000 for a cab they will redesign rather than fix and and customise mine....:

They are happy to ship my mvs board back to me and keep the cab as payment for their time and diagnostic.

I'm sure they are.

You got screwed over big time, best to cut your loses rather than give them 3x what the cab is worth to get it back.

Which company is it? Sounds like they are trying to rip you off. Get it back off them and don't give them another penny. You will get all the help you need on here and won't need to send your whole cab off to get fixed.

What! Exactly what diagnostics did they do? They probably did nothing at all. They will have hoped to sell you a new cab probably with LCD for £1200 then knock off £100 if they keep your cab then LCD your one, put new art on then sell to someone else for £1200. If they try and charge you for diagnostics get them to detail and prove what they have done as my bet is they did nothing apart from plug it in.

They say the chassis and the monitor don’t match and that the chassis has come from a 20” CRT and mine is 26” so a new one would be needed rather than a repair.

I think upon these replies I’m best off getting it back. If I can manage to upload a pic of the cab they offered me to redesign for me i will. It disappointed me that this would be preferred over fixing up mine.

Oh boy. They're just looking to squeeze as much money out of you as possible, by the sounds of it. Just get the cab back as is, ASAP. As mentioned, there's people on the forum that can help with fixing whatever issues it has.

Name and shame so others don't get scammed. That picture they sent you is a cab Argos used to sell that contains a decased tv and pirate famicom (nes) console.

Ha yes I said that to him when he sent and told him it’s only got a 14inch screen but he explained it would changed for 20” CRT and re-designed.

The costs to re-design an Argos cab rather than mine as left me disheartened by it all and have to ask why re-design anything when I have sent you one you could could help clean up and repair...Moremonj2020-08-08 16:36:58

The icing on the cake would be the original cabinet turns out to be something cool, a space launcher or something.

I'd be nice until I got my stuff back though, wouldn't go charging in guns blazing.
