I finally have a working Outrun!
I got it for free many years ago, included with another purchase. There was a note attached to it which said RAM ERROR DO NOT FIX, so I knew that it wasn't working. But there were of course other issues too.
- Boards didn't work (repaired by retroclinic)
- Monitor didn't work (replaced with NOS monitor)
- Start button broken (purchased NOS from Arcadefixit)
- Steering gears broken (purchased metal gears from Giz10p)
- Marquee light was gone
- Shifter was broken
- Fan needed replacing
- Steering wheel needed replacing (luckily I found a nice one)
I got a very nice fiberglass dash repro from Wim Outrun (thanks!), because my original dash was full of cigarette burns and it was literally falling apart around the shifter.
I thought I would restore the cabinet this summer, but I realized that I didn't have the time for it this year. So I've just replaced/repaired parts and got the game fully working.
I have purchased two(!) sets of stencils to paint the cabinet sides next summer. The first one I got from a forum member here, and it was terribly inaccurate and frankly worthless. £120 wasted.
So I got a set from This Old Game, and that looks perfect.
Anyway, here is a picture! It's in the garage at the moment, but I will move it inside tonight.
