Have you guys got techniques for the bosses? I always find them a bit hairy and hit n miss, sometimes i breeze past them, sometimes I get swamped bullet hell styleee

When they appear from the top of the screen, the tail appears first with somewhat limited firepower. Have your plane at the limit of its reach to the top of the screen when he appears. This way, you fire as many shots at the tail before the wings appear and hail you with shots. When that hail happens, you'll find that the boss is near the bottom of the screen, about to move back up. Use a roll over as he goes UP, as he shoots less on the way up and you have more room to move, shooting continually all the time.

Remember the tip for the smaller 'big' planes. Get right under the wing shooting continually. He can't shoot at all if you're in that position.
