I wonder if anyone else pulled pang 3 b boards from their scrap pile after seeing this.

I don't think anyone else has noticed

I did originally start encoding the first program rom like Pang 3 but stopped when I found Strider kept glitching, it was easier when you didn't have to link the 8 data lines and remove the protection chip.
It may have been an eprom speed issue but I was using 100ns, I figured reliability was better.

Woah what hang on where eh?

I love Pang but not a fan of #3. The more the series went on the more they seemed to lose it.
I wasn't aware that the Pang3 boards could be converted to anything?

It pays to check my updates

There's so much more to do, I have lots of ideas just not enough time to do them all. That reminds me, still need to write manuals for Slice & Atari System 1 multi.............

Oh, btw, you will need to stock up on 27c322 & 27c160's if you want to do the conversions. The Pang 3 B board PAL hardly has any address lines connected to it so to get the games right I had to remap the gfx and spread them out in the large eproms.
I recommend getting second hand ones from China either from Aliexpress or Ebay as they go for under 70p each. They usually have sewing machine code in them.

Does this mean we will be seeing a conversion for a sewing machine soon??
Did that already, hacked them to only make jumpers with Pacman on them, then Namco came after me with a law suit, so the hack will never see the light of day

I had a chance to do the Pang 3 conversion today and snapped some pictures, I chose Willow as I've never played it on the real hardware before. I bought a faulty board years ago but the C board was dead.

Mach chip removed.

Three chips removed and sockets installed, Mitchell saved a few pence by soldering the chips directly into the board.

Wire links added.

Very nice - one of my faves

Sadly my luck went the other way, I think I've just buggered up an A-board, it's now giving me the wrong 8x8 character blocks on enemy sprites

(this was after trying out a new pang3 b board, without having the correct c board for it)

Thanks for posting back on the thread. Great pics, neat wire work.
Am guessing you found my minimal instructions alright then

after some PMs I just found this patcher - and last week I received a PANG3 board, is it fate?
GadgetFreak can we also expect more PANG3 conversions? :) (need to stock up on 322 and 160s first...)

I will try the Wonder Boy System2 conversion in the following days, I'll update once I do it

Excellent work GadgetFreak!

Since I had some free time today used the patcher to make a working Wonder Boy set for my System2 board, all worked fine

you might wonder about that wire on the 3 GALs on the bottom right corner:

It is just an experiment. First I did the mod the way GadgetFreak writes in the instructions: connect pins 8+10 and insert in socket with pins 9~10~11~12 hanging outside on the right side.

It worked just fine but I noticed that the GALs were getting VERY hot, very quickly.

So as per Lattice's recommendation on the datasheet I tried having all floating pins tied to ground. I thought this might help but nope - still hot.

Lastly I did what you saw in the picture, left all unused pins outside the socket and just fed ground to pin10 so the IC would work. Alas it also made no difference.

Is it normal for the GALs when used to replaced the N82S129AN proms to become extremely hot?

Maybe the 16V8B variant is not an optimal one?

Other than that the conversion works great - kudos GadgetFreak for the patcher!!!!

I'd like to do a M82 Major Title to R-Type conversion. I read the old guides and I'm working out what to do using this fabulous patcher. Can someone help me, I need to confirm which eproms I need for a new complete set and which inexpensive programmer would be recommended? I started checking eBay for a programmer and new eproms but a bit lost as to which are the correct versions.

Can someone help me, I need to confirm which eproms I need for a new complete set and which inexpensive programmer would be recommended? I started checking eBay for a programmer and new eproms but a bit lost as to which are the correct versions.

This is the Patch Info from the program:
PATCH INFO "R-Type"
CUSTOMA (M82): This modifies the M72 version of the game to work on the Major Title M82 board.
This patch also adds high score saving if you replace the ram chip as listed in the HSS-NV RAM notes.
Program roms (4 x 1Mb), Sprite roms (4 x 1Mb), GFX roms (4 x 1Mb), Sound rom (1 x 512Kb).
A new "Burn" sub folder will be created with correctly combined roms, named with the M82 socket location.
JUMPERS (M82): J5 near IC48(C1) needs to be changed from '1MM' to 'OT', leave J4 near IC48(C1) as 'OT'.

You will see by looking at the board that the N0-3 and the C0-3 roms are mask type and will need to be removed from the board. This must be done carefully as there are fine tracks that run between the pins. The safest way is to cut each pin next to the chip casing itself then remove each pin separately and suck the solder from each hole.
For these 8 locations you will need to use a 32 pin socket and a 27C010 eprom. The Winbond W27c010 electrically eraseable chips also work well.
For the program (4 x 27c010) & sound (1 x 27c512) roms it is possible to erase the existing eproms and reprogram them if you have an eprom eraser.
Just about any eprom programmer will be able to handle this size of eprom as they are only 32 pins.
To attempt this conversion you must be capable with a soldering iron or you could damage the board.
