Always happy to help you Alex if I can

If you decide to spray your Popeye, you can always bring it over and do it at mine. There could be a few laughs involved though and possibly some cock ups

Took the day off so dived into the Garage for the day!

First off, I had a minor repair on the base to sort out. The staples were knackered so I glued the base where it had come adrift and reinforce all four corners of the base with headless nails

Then sanded the base

I then whipped around the complete exposed side of the cab taking off the worst bits with abrasive paper

A couple of worst bits

The corner I filled with wood glue and clamped it

Then mixed up a pva/water solution and applied it to all the bare, damaged timber then wiped away the excess

Then mixed up some 2 pack filler and started to fill the damaged areas

While the first load of filler was going off, I had a sh*tty job on next. Some knobber had nailed the wooden bezel retainers with nails that were too long and then bent them over

There were four in total, once they were all out, I used some 3/4" panel pins to secure the retainer

Started to fill the holes but forgot to take a picture

Only two of the five monitor mounting bolt holes are used on a vertical DK so I fill the 3 unused holes as they tend top bubble the sideart if left open. These dudes are for a horizontal conversion like Popeye or Mario Bros....but we don't wanna do that!

Anyhow, it was now all about filling/sanding

I always use a decent square block to sand the edges to keep them square. Using paper alone tends to round the edges off

I then flipped the cab over while filler was drying on the other side and made a start, this side is in a lot better shape. The clamp is still attached so couldn't roll the cab right over

Again.... filling, sanding......

Again, three monitor mounting bolt holes are filled

....and that was it for the day!

Cheers, Al

You did a grand job on the base
From the pictures it looked like it needed replacing
Keeping it original I like

To any one else reading this, dont go to halfords unless you have a fat wallet
Cost me a fortune to spray mine from there

Cheers, Al,

The base did sort out ok indeed

Some of the photobucket links had failed but I've just replaced them. The new Photobucket is crap they should have left it alone!!!

Doesn't matter where you go for paint now Alex, it's become bloody expensive stuff!!

I have one more to do after this which will be my last Nintendo resto.

I will do my Galaxian and probably the Joust cocktail......then retire

Got a few hours in on the cab yesterday(Sunday)

I released the clamp from the corner. After sawing the glue out of the T-molding slot I was left with this

....and now had to try to make the corner look like the other side, note the hole = pain in the arse!

Ok, first fill. This needs to be done in layers to get the maximum strength from the filler

Sanded/shaped

The next pics are all about shaping/filling etc to try and get this looking ok

That's close enough

Anyhow, I started to prep the rear top/lower

Inside

exposed side (again)

Rear door

The first side is ready for a fine prep with sander then it will be ready for primer. The primer will show me any bits I've missed.

The new addition to the resto tools.....the poor old Ryobi was knackered

Although I didn't start doing this....Ninty formica dust is in a league of it's own. The stuff comes off by the tonne and goes EVERYWHERE!! So, I needed my mask, which I didn't have and I need to cover up some stuff before I start that. So I flipped the cab over and started filling the other side again
smiley19.gif

While filler was drying earlier I preserved the base of the cab. I didn't need to do it but I had the stuff and I was waiting for the filler to dry.

That's it for now!

I dig the way you make it all look so simple and the excellent results you finish off with. Sheesh, even I might have a chance at some restoration after reading your useful threads.

Nice work Al!

Can you not show members here you covered in blue dust ?
Because I remember me looking like a smurf

It's not so bad this time as the sander collects 80% of the dust and I have the hoover hose in the other hand taking away the rest.

You live and learn otherwise it would certainly be Smurf time!

The skill in repairing with filler Ian is minimal, it's a patience game and whether or not you can actually be bothered to keep going over the same damned piece and then rubbing it back again, and again, and again. It's not a lot of fun at times and boring beyond belief.

Yes, you have to stop either when it's perfect, or you've lost the will to live...

Did a bit on this over the weekend…..finishing the bit’s already shown previously, so pointless posting the pictures.

The cab is prepped and ready to mask/prime. I’m tempted to roll the inside of the cab although this is not my preferred method but it keeps the cost down and also there is no overspray. If I’m not happy with it, I can simply key the finished coat and spray it if the finish isn’t satisfactory.

Upright again
