eBay now look to add the 20% VAT from EU sellers

It’s actually a bit naughty if it’s a private seller.

My understanding of VAT, is that it’s only charged if the company is VAT registered. Individuals are not VAT registered, so if your paying VAT I’d want to see evidenced they were registered for tax purposes.

Otherwise you’re just giving them 20% for sod all.

If eBay are taking it, we’ll that’s double naughty. The VAT should be applied to the commission they take from the seller. As they do not receive the funds from the sale, so to take 20% of the sale value, when the fee for their services is only at most 10% of that, is fleecing you.

I saw this too. I was looking at buying an Alan-1 Star Wars Yoke. But after that new duty rate they have slapped on US hardware imports. its way beyond what I want to spend. It might slip through but Im not taking the risk.

I don't buy from ebay overseas anymore.

One must be very desperately looking for a specific part to accept those insane USPS shipping rates

ebay is a commercial entity so I think that's why VAT has so far been applied to sales in a hurried and not quite thought out way.

(This is by order of the UK government's new trade agreement by the way, it's not something the EU has imposed).

It's something you could likely avoid by buying direct from facebook groups or here on the forum.. depends if PayPal get caught up in it too (that's likely isn't it..).

Whether ebay get clearance to waive UK VAT for private individuals trading across borders in due course we will see... but yeah, in the short term expect prices to rise and watch those checkout baskets carefully for VAT added at the very last moment without warning.

And it's not just ebay, alibaba is the same etc.. etc..

Lots of Euro firms are currently refusing to do the new extra paperwork involved with exporting to the UK given they can trade elsewhere with less hassle, and they find the thought of having to register for VAT in the UK in order to send money to the UK goverment somewhat offensive - as most of us would likely be offended if we had to register with governments abroad to give them taxes too.

As for fish, the majority of the UK quota (55%) was sold to overseas companies long ago, and the smaller proportion of UK fishing vessels remaining were making good money selling 75% of their catch to the Eurozone. If they go under due to export hassles, guess who'll be buying the liquidation quotas? Another UK fisherman? Unlikely..

Yep, it's not just us individuals - a lot of big businesses are having shipping issues also.

Welcome to Brexit - higher costs, more bureaucracy and additional paperwork. As predicted.

So has the £17 limit thing with USA now gone out of the window too? looking at Snes games that are $5 they have customs etc now slapped on, in some cases higher than the actual game cost, this only used to come up if the item was over $20. I can see all of the UK prices been driven up higher now, supply and demand and all that.

Well done to all those that voted to leave the EU! Give yourself a nice pat on the Back, well done!!!!!

I didn't vote as I couldn't decide what was best with all the lies from both side. Politicians are corrupt and liars, generally only putting themselves first and saying whatever makes them "look" best. Always breaking their promises. Bunch of @unts. Not many selfless ones. Self important...

I don't remember this being advertised as a consequence of brexit.

Was there anything stopping the government doing this if we hadn't left the EU? Could just have been done if we remained...??

there seems to be a lot of misunderstandings scattered in this thread.
I don't fully understand it myself, but have read up, and also have a fair bit of experience dealing with the EU & UK VAT registrations and rules.

I understand it as Ebay collect the VAT, the VAT goes to our country.

eBay is implementating this

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55530721

I imagine the smaller direct sellers selling under £135 don't want to sign up and pay vat directly to HMRC so have decided to stop selling to the UK.

I imagine the Bulgaria postage issue further up this thread is the postal service working out how the fork to implement it.

And to answer Bensonrad the £17 threshold or whatever it was has gone.

And just to add another post..

Happy for this post to show any benefits or barriers to leaving the EU - it is what it is for the plus and minuses, bit let's not fight either side because you voted In or Out; otherwise it'll decend into name calling and malice.

Thanks

Yep. f@cking bunch of scumbags m8, hence why I would have just stayed as we were! No we would not have had to pay 20% Tax if we stayed in the EU!! along with a shat load of other crap we have to deal with as we have now left!!

It’s also the knock-on effect. It is now effecting some UK sellers to UK buyers too.

A Buy It Now item in my watch list has just jumped up 10%. Here is the updated description from the seller...

UK eBay Seller said:
Unfortunately I have had to increase prices on all my products as from the 1st January international sellers to the UK will automatically addon 20% VAT on all the components I purchase. Previously this was not done for items under £15. This means all the components I purchase for these boards has gone up 20% (This is due to new EU /Brexit regulations)

So the UK seller has now added 10% on his product price because the parts he imports to assemble his boards are costing him an additional 20%.

Once we pay the VAT or equivalent to whichever eBay site we buy from, Will we still be liable to U.K. VAT and import duty on top?

I think in time this will end up effecting even the smaller eu sellers on forums too. Any time I have sold items to the UK, VAT has to be payed at the post office, you can mark the value down as low, but then if the item gets lost your screwed and wont be able to claim the full value.
Its a ball ache too sending stuff for repair, as the forms are long winded, and if someone's doing you a favour looking at a board, you don't really want to lumber them with endless forms, usually just end up paying the extra VAT to save the hassle.

Send via a reputable Courier if you need to mark items down in value! I just got a new Dive Watch and Remote Tank Transmitter from Dubai in 2 Days with FedEx, $1800 Marked to value of $40 and no Duty!!
