My understanding of VAT, is that it’s only charged if the company is VAT registered. Individuals are not VAT registered, so if your paying VAT I’d want to see evidenced they were registered for tax purposes.
Otherwise you’re just giving them 20% for sod all.
If eBay are taking it, we’ll that’s double naughty. The VAT should be applied to the commission they take from the seller. As they do not receive the funds from the sale, so to take 20% of the sale value, when the fee for their services is only at most 10% of that, is fleecing you.
