I understand that the thinking was to target EU-based sellers who already have stock warehoused in the UK, and could therefore bypass the new checks at the border.

Seems a bit short-sighted not to realise that this would happen with vendors who DIDN'T have stock in the UK already, though.

thats mad, why would anyone want to become a tax collector for a foreign country

Agreed. You can imagine the potential uproar in Britain if Beijing or Moscow decided that they wanted British companies to collect tax on their behalf for their countries.

It seems the option at the moment for foreign companies who don’t want to be tax collectors for the UK is for them to sell their wares via online marketplaces. All this will do is push up prices for the consumer and make already large companies even more richer through their fees.

I was sending a few parcels today and got the lowdown on my end.

Strangely enough, I'd be able to send small-ish pcbs for the same as usual, but anything larger and it's gonna cost 25 sterling and up.

Just for comparison, I was able to send the equivalent of a small fridge for like 15 before.

I had an item return to the sender in Hong Kong as it was processed the day after the agreement.

The seller told me existing DDP service (Delivered Duty Paid) is no longer available to the UK.

They now have to ship the item back to the UK again without duty paid, for UK customs to review and apply import tax.

I'm only going on what the seller told me, perhaps the shipping route was via another European country, however if correct then I would have thought with some proper planning the UK could have phased in the changes, so not to affect parcels already in the system.

Can we not set up a international car boot or largest charity shop, where everything is donated or bought bought with tokens. Which can then secretly be exchanged for cash !

Millionaires and multi million pound companies manage to avoid tax and vat.

Surely for some it

VAT is not paid for ...

", and goods sold in charity shops which have been donated by members of the public"

Just happy to be alive at the moment !

Just had a Wrestling figure I pre-ordered from USA back in August 2020, they dispatched it on 01st Dec, its just arrived in the UK yesterday. (Fed Ex to Royal Mail). Figure was $40.49, post was $17.25. Normally when I get figures from them they seem to skip customs, maybe I've been lucky. This one though I had the Royal Mail customs to pay card today, £6 VAT and £8 Royal Mail charge for letting me know. Oddly on Royal Mails system it said it had come from Sweden (not USA).

I found it highly amusing when a Company owner said he didn't realise that this would affect his Business after voting to leave! now he is struggling and won't be able to go on much longer and said he wouldn't have voted to leave if he knew this was going to happen!

any business that cant adapt to the new regulations for importing and exporting to the EU from the Uk doesn't deserve to survive as they are obviously being run by idiots. Anyone would think that paperwork is a new thing, every single truck that has entered the UK since 1992 has had to have paperwork for its load, all extra that is needed now is an online declaration, which if you are selling regularly is an absolute piece of piss, and a piece of paperwork to go with the vehicle, something that has been happening to imports and exports for outside the EU forever. Im sure if the multitude of Turkish and Russian hauliers can manage it every day through Dover then the British should be able to do so too.

We were told the whole of Kent would come to a standstill because trucks wouldn't be able to move - this didn't happen. Then we were told it is because no trucks are moving through Dover because everyone is too scared to do so, well if so how come most ferries are full of trucks, with up to 400 lorries arriving every hour?

It is time people realised that there was a democratic vote, where people voted to leave for many varied reasons, it happened and it is done, and to try to make a success of it.

The EU is falling apart - the Polish have had their voting rights removed because Merckel insists they must take immigrants, which the Polish people don't want, the Mediterranean countries have had their economies trashed and are on the verge of leaving, even the Dutch are waiting to see the result of Brexit and considering a referendum.

I ordered some T-shirts and figure off the WWE website yesterday as had a rather tasty sale going on. I've bought in the past from them and it was always lucky if you didn't get hit with the usual royal mail surcharge and customs at this end. But they have now changed the checkout to match whatever the new criteria was, postage was only £13 from the states which was very reasonable and it worked out the VAT which you paid there and then, so no hidden charges or bump ups by 3rd parties, nice and swift and easy and no dreading the Royal Mail charging me their £10 fee. Hopefully other companies will put such things in place. I don't mind paying VAT, I just hate all the hidden charges that seem to have gone hand in hand with it in the past.

Im the same - having paid £6.16 the other day in VAT but also £11 for the privilege by DHL its not the tax, it is the extortionate charge on top.

The new rules are for order values under £135 where the UK are expecting the sellers in foreign countries to collect the 20% UK VAT and pay this directly to HMRC instead of it being done at the border, and I believe they have to register for this which is why a lot of companies are presently not selling to the UK anymore.

And they have to pay HMRC fees for having this VAT account! Hence why a lot of them are not interested anymore.

Also for us lot sending stuff to Europe.

If we declare a cost of about £19 (it has to be under 22E) then it falls under a low cost item levy exclusion agreement with the EU until July 2021 and the person we are sending to won't have to pay anything. After July, what happens is still up for negotiation.

Anything above that 22 Euro limit means the receiver has to pay local customs, tax and duty fees like we always have done when ordering internationally from USA or whatever.

Meanwhile in New Zealand , we have gst same as vat t stands for tax ,
All they do is attach the invoice to parcel if tax has been paid parcel moves through coustoms.
if not a tax payment is required .It shouldn’t involve the seller after it was sent
Isn’t that what’s happing .
